2262.0. "Government Car Safety Handbook" by TASTY::JEFFERY (Children need to learn about X in school) Wed May 18 1994 18:26

Interesting thing in the news this lunchtime, talked about a Government book on
car safety. They have compiled a list of statistics from hundreds of thousands
of car accidents, and graded the cars on their safety.

According to the news, for small hatchbacks, the Renault 5 was safe
(surprising, I liked them, but people have criticised the thin metal they are
made of), and the Citroen 2CV was bad.

Medium sized cars : good - Astra, poor - Orion

Large cars : good - Jaguar, poor - Senator (funny that this is the favourite
car for the police!!)

An item on Radio 4 last night quoted the statistics as saying
the safest small cars were Renault 5's built between 1983 and
1985. Does anyone know where to get ths book from? I suspect
there is much more to it than reported on the news last night.

This thing was described more as a 'pamphlet' than a book and as such a
rip-off... according to Mike Rutherford in Carweek.

Well Basingstoke Post Office hadn't a clue what I was
talking about, so I can't comment.

There was some mention of this on TV where someone said
that you cannot look at the cars alone, but you need to
take into account that certain cars attract certain types
of driver.

I saw a snippet in a paper which suggested this pamphlet contained the
statistics that last year 3,800 people died on the roads and this was
the lowest figure for a long time. Were any reasons given? Are there
fewer accidents? Do the rescue services save more victims? Or what?
