2222.0. "Peugeot-Fiat Monospace Car" by LEMAN::CHEVAUX (Patrick Chevaux @GEO, DTN 821-4150) Wed Feb 09 1994 17:29

Peugeot (Peugeot and Citroen) an Fiat (Fiat and Lancia) have worked on
another joint project which will materialize later this year. This time
the result is a 'monospace' along the concept developed by Matra in the
early 80's, later sold to rival Renault who introduced it as the Espace

Peugeot will launch their monospace as the '806' next summer while
Citroen will follow with the 'Evolution'. Fiat will probably launch
their version at about the same time while Lancia plan to release a
more classy version in early 1995.

The 'car' looks very similar to the Renault-Matra Espace but has 2
sliding doors for access to the back seats. Other features are similar
to that of the Espace (revolving front seats, ...).

According to L'Equipe the European 'monospace' market is 120000 units
per year (the US market for minvans is 1 million) of which Renault
holds 50% (60000 units) and Chrysler have 25% (30000 Voyagers).

  re: MPVs

The MPV is a Mazda product, not a generic term we use. The phrase we use
is mini-vans. Of course there is also the 4wd truck type person carrier
which is all the rage over here. The term for those is SUV, or Suburban
  Utility Vehicle.

This is a nit, but SUV is Sport Utility Vehicle from what I have read.

As far as a Peugeot/Fiat joint venture, I never heard of any. What
    was it?

Actually, I prefer to think of SUV as pSeudo Utility Vehicle....

and primarily refers to something like the Espace, that can carry a full load
of people, then can have the seats removed (quickly?) and be used as a van,
with preferably a choice of seating arrangement as some intermediate step.

By this definition, until now the ONLY `MPV's have been the Renault and Chrysler
models, as ALL of the Japanese `People-carriers' have needed to use tools to
remove the seats (NOT quickly!).

I presume that the Pug-Citr-Fiat has Q-D seats?

The previous Peugeot-Fiat joint venture was on their equivalent to the
Ford Transit.... I don't know about anyhwere eles, but in the UK the
van was/is sold with Citroen/Talbot and Fiat badges.

If this joint venture thingy that everyone is thinking about is
definitely a car... the only recent one that I can think of that
involves Fiat was the Fiat Croma/ Renault 25/ Saab 9000 doobrie...
