2190.0. "FREE WHEELING WHEEL TRIMS" by CHEFS::TOWNSENDS (STEWART TOWNSEND @REO) Mon Dec 13 1993 20:34

I've had an Astra Estate for just over 6 months now. It's O.K. in a bland sort
of way except for one real irritation - the wheel trims/embellishers keep
falling off! I've had 4 replacements during that 6 months. The other day, I
made a right turn and saw the trim from the rear nearside rolling off in the
other direction! Is this a "feature" on Vauxhalls/new style Astras? Never had
this problem on the Rovers/Citroens and Renaults I've leased before.

It's a common problem on Astras with ultra-low profile tyres.

I had a Cavalier 2.0i which had low-profile tyres. This shed all the
wheeltrims, & then shed all the replacements. PHH said "We're not
paying" & Vauxhall said "We're not paying either".

Vauxhall rep went on to say that there is no known problem, you
probably hit the kerb. They dont fall off, but they can be secured with
clothtape. Vauxhall very kindly agreed to send me one set of wheeltrims
so that I could try this fix to the non-existant problem.

The result was after fixing cloth tape to the points of contact, the
wheeltrims never fell off again. My guess is that the glue leaches
through the tape under pressure & glues it all together.

If you run into a deepish puddle at speed, the water pressure gets between
the hub and the trim and forces it off - that's waht Vauxhall told me.

You can use plastic cable ties to hold them in place, hooked through
the holes in the wheel. They're not noticeable unless you get close,
and they also help prevent the light-fingered amongst us from removing
    them.

You do, however, need to remember to carry some sort of cutter with you
in case you get a puncture. Those cable ties are *strong*

I saw a Goodyear made film once with a camera positioned looking at the front
wheel. They tried various combinations of wheels and tyres. What was REAL scary
was the amount that your average steel wheel distorts during conering. It's VERY
visible. The wider the tyre and the lower the profile the worse it got because
the give in the tyres became less and less. Alloys don't flex but they do break,
hence forrest rallying has seen several people revert to steels because they
bend when hitting a rock, rather than shattering.

Drive slower or put alloys on, or tie the trim on, or throw them away!
