2152.0. "Australian Rally. Not all happy news..." by GIDDAY::OMELEY (We work the black seam together...) Mon Sep 20 1993 02:46

    Hi all,

as you are probably aware the Australian round of the World Rally
championship is currently underway in the paddocks around Perth.

Unfortunately there have been a couple of top-runners crash out inthe
fast "YORK" stages on Saturday. Carlos and the Lancia bit the dust _BIG
TIME_, Didier had a motor break in the GT-4 and Possum Bourne had a
very big shunt (fast roll into tree's...)

Unfortunately Possum's co-driver, Roger Freeth (N.Z like Poss)), passed
away Saturday in Perth Hosp, due to internal injuries sustained in the
crash. Possum is Ok, but shaken. For those that haven't seen Roger in
action,he was a very accomplished motor-sport competitor. I first saw
him on a MacIntosh Suzuki (Motorcycle) at Mt Panorama (Bathurst) inthe
early 80's, where he "owned" the endurance event there. A great
rider/competitor, the world and NZ/Oz will miss him.

Current status of the rally (heard on the radio on the way in this
morning). Juhu K. leading followed by a Subaru (not sure if it's Ari or
    his UK team-mate).

Some of the new Lancer's and Escorts have been going well. Local hero
Ross Dunkerton, has been flying (6th place) in his new Lancer. The new
Audo Quatro S looks great, one very slick looking car and being driven
quite smoothly (in the telecast at least).

    Cheers

    	Rob

Yes, Rodger Freeth (a doctor in AstroPhysics) was a great autosport competitor,
in everything from motorcycles, through saloon cars to rallying. Typical of
him that he developed a new pace noting system after he took over co-driving
for Possum Bourne. A thinker with a switch he could throw to go into party
mode!

During the recent NZ rally I met Beverley his wife for the first time. My
sympathies go to her and the kids.

Au reviour Rodger.
