2150.0. "ASTRA BELMONT (Any Info)" by KIRKTN::DRANKIN (DOUG) Sat Sep 18 1993 20:42

    I Have recently purchased a J` registered Vauxhall Astra Belmont(old
    shape)and have looked through all the Astra notes.....There seems to
    be no mention of any Astra Belmonts at all..
    Is their anybody out there who has got a Astra Belmont that could give
    me any more information on the car.....

                                         Dougie.

It was a few years back now, but as I remember, I bought the car with about
65,000 miles on the clock. I had no mechanical failures as far as I can
remember (nothing of any great expense anyway!) until the car had done
98,000 miles. I came out to the car one morning and found oil all over the
road. The dipstick was pushed up about two inches and oil had been pushed
up through the tube. I took it to the garage and they said the everything
was blocked and pressure had built up inside. I had two options, a engine
strip down and rebuild, or a new engine, neither of which was worth the money
for a car with that many miles on.

I traded it in for 1k.

It was the 1.8 GLSi, so (compared with the Astra 1.3 I had previously)
performance was very good. Handling was good about from a slight torque
steer.

The paintwork was pretty poor - flaky around the back of the roof and around
the sunroof and the paint on the bonnet had faded quite badly.
2150.4Don`t get a tow bar.....KIRKTN::GMOORESome days are better than othersTue Sep 21 1993 20:113
    My mate had a sxi i think his main problem was
    that the engine blew up after towing his caravan
    for a fortnight around britain.

     Thanks for the info.....It has only done 14000 miles so it should last
      a wee while yet....
     As for the Sxi,Gav you don`t have any mates.....

2150.6Towing, no problem.CMOTEC::JASPERMon Sep 27 1993 16:249
    ...I had a 1800 glsi & towed a HEAVY caravan all over Europe.
    No probs AT ALL save for soft suspension at the rear which sagged when
    the caravan was hooked up. I also had two bikes on the boot & a
    windsurfer on the roof.
     But the soft suspension is by design & not a fault. My
    neighbours got the car now & like me, he has had no significant
    problems. Its D-reg & still in super shape after 90,000 miles.
