2147.0. "Carlton Diesels?" by COMICS::BEDDALL (UK Product and Technology Group) Tue Sep 07 1993 17:25

I'm trying to decide whether to get a Carlton Club 2.3 TD Estate or a
Peugeot GRDT Estate. There is not a lot of difference between quoted
price once you take the extra tax into consideration. On the face of it
the carlton is a much more expensive car for the same lease pice as the
Peugot. However I can find lots of people to tell me how good the
Peugeot is, but I know of no one who has a Carlton Diesel. Should this
in itself tell me something? Does anyone know what the Carlton diesels
are like?

If you want space, then I think you will find that the Carlton Estate
    is unbeatable...

    Hi Pete,

    I can't give you a direct comparison but I changed a Carlton 2.0i CDX
Estate for a Peugot 405 STDT Estate.

The Peugot seems to have more power and is much more economical. All
round, its not bad. But for space and comfort, the Carlton cannot be
compared. As for the Carlton deisel, I have no experience.

    Hope this helps.

Pete ,
While I was in at my local Vauxhall dealer today I got talking to this
guy who had his Carlton L 2.3TD Saloon J reg in being looked at .

He liked the car very much getting 37-38 MPG on average and going down to 32-33
whilst towing his caravan , his only complaint and reason for being there was
that it was very dirty/smokey . He even took me for a run in itwhile I was
waiting and I thought that it seemed very quite inside and seemed to have a
good power to weight ratio and that it was smooth and comfortable .

The garage also had a CLUB Estate on show in 2.0I form in Spectral Blue which
looked very nice with its standard alloys the load space is massive so the only
draw back is that its going to be replaced with the OMEGA with the BMW 2.5TD
engine but then again I bet the price will jump up.

There are a couple of Uk mags which might help you - Estate & MPV, or
Diesel cars. I read in the latter a few months back about how crap
Vauxhall diesels are..I think they are sourced from Japan..but Im
always wrong. Anyway in perfomance terms they are poor eg
acceleration, mpg and reliability.....until recently the
Puegeot/Citroen diesels were considered the tops, but Audi and BMW
diesels are highly regarded. I understand that in future Vauxhall cars
with diesel engines (starting with Fronteras & new Carltons) will have
BMW diesels. Given that the Carlton is a 'benchmark' car, then the
prices should be reasonable for the new ones, otherwise the company
promises will........(insert your own interpretation here...)

Stuart,

At last, someone who has seen one...

That somewhat puts my mind at ease, particularly the fuel consumption
whist towing, as that's one of the reasons I wanted the diesel. But
just to be sure, the garage are getting a diesel from Vauxhall for me to
try out.

If you note the small print of VTX, it specifically says that the
Carlton prices are for the 1993 models only.

Almost as an aside, the breakdown mechanic who came out to fix my (until now
superbly reliable Honda) told me Audi/VW diesels were tops for reliability,
and theta Ford and Vauxhall cut corners and consequently quality and
reliability suffered.

Sounds like it may be worth taking out the extended 3 year (50,000 kms)
extended warranty on the Mondeo I just bought :-(
