2124.0. "VAUXHALL FUEL CONSUMPTION" by SHIPS::TUCKER_T () Tue Jul 27 1993 17:32

    Now that the choice of cars is somewhat limited my mind has turned to
    such mundane things as the differences in fuel consumption. I see the figures
    in the manufacturers handbooks and press but they seldom appear to
    relate to real life. I think this is because it depends so much on the
    indivuals driving habits and type of journey. With the mileage I do for
    instance the mpg tends to relate most closely to the constant 75 mph
    figure. I would be interested to hear any personal experiences of
    consumption acheived over the Vauxhall TD's especially the 2.3TD. It
    would be useful if a quick summary of the type of journey was included
    (30% town, 70% motorway, normal cruising speed, typical length of
    journey).

    My Cavalier 2.0i CD (G reg)used to average about 41 mpg and my Cavalier GSI
    (H) averaged 37.5. Both cars covered 50K plus. My journeys were mainly 60
    miles plus, no regular town traffic, 60% dual carriageway + and 40% A
    roads. I tend to cruise about 5 mph faster than I should.

2124.1Cavalier Turbo Diesel Info?CHEFS::CURRIEIDyslexic snice brithTue Jul 27 1993 18:1219
    Re .0

    Just to emphasise how much driving style can modify the figures, I too
    had a G-registered Cavalier 2.0i CD, and did much the same mix of
    motoring - only in those days I wasn't too worried about fuel
    consumption. Hence I drove with a heavy right foot and got c. 33 m.p.g.

    I am impressed that 40 m.p.g. is attainable. I am now driving a
    Peugeot 405 turbo diesel (rather more carefully) and am only getting
    about 43 - 43 m.p.g.

    I would be very interested in anyone's experience of the Cavalier 1.7
    TD (especially in CD trim), as I am considering one as my next car.
    What sort of consumption does it give? And is the engine installation
    any more refined than in the Astra (which I found decidedly
    agricultural in comparison to the Peugeot)? If I can't afford a
    Xantia, then it may have to be another Cavalier...

2124.2How do you do it?ROCKS::CAMPTue Jul 27 1993 18:3213
    I guess it depends on how you drive your car, but to get 41 and 37.5
    MPG overall out of a 2 litre car is phenominal. The question I ask is
    on what is this based. Do you record all fuel used and milage covered
    on a regular basis? Or do you have a MPG computer. For the record the 2
    litre BMW I had for 60,000 miles the MPG Computer always came out at
    25-26 MPG. Yes I could get the odd 30-35 MPG by reseting the MPG after
    the car was hot and drive carefully for a few miles, but the end result was
    always 25-26 MPG averaged over 500 or more miles.
    Just gos to show how bad the BMW is for fuel economy.
    Even my turbo diesel only returns 42-43 MPG and thats only 1900 cc.
    Whats your secret to such superb fuel consumption?
    Mike

I have a Cavalier 2.0 CDi "H' reg. Over 40K miles so far. I get over 40mpg on a
mixture of town and motorway driving.

    Calibra 2.0i 8v    I get 33 MPG overall.  Measured manually over 2000miles.

    Mostly booting it around Warrington, (3 miles to work) and twice a week
    100 mile round trips to Wales.

    Huw.

    P.S. remember that the Calibra has a closer ratio box than the 115 bhp
    Cavaliers (except SRi)
2124.5Why I think I should have a dieselSHIPS::TUCKER_TTue Jul 27 1993 20:3014
    The GSI had the computer the CD was based on miles covered divided by
    petrol in the tank. In both cases I was doing about 900 miles a week so
    it wasn't hard to keep track. Incidentally Paul Thakeray used to
    get 39 mpg out of his CD. I was always checking the mpg as much of my
    own dosh was going into the tank as it was commuting (Weymouth - Snams
    and latterly Weymouth -SBP). The 88 miles used to take 95 minutes
    except when there was a breakdown at Hockley lights. I accept these
    figures are only as good as the odo.. err mileage recorder but I felt
    that was fairly accurate. My Mazda 626 2.0i does 37 mpg but I do think
    I'm fairly lucky on the type of road and the times I was using the A
    roads. I stress town work and short journeys were virtually nil.

2124.635+ MPG in an SRIBAHTAT::SKIDAW::aldertonmTue Jul 27 1993 22:2115
I regularly get 36MPG from my cavalier SRi.

I travel 25 miles each way to the office down a mixture of country lanes
and the City ring road (start/stop stuff).

I keep a record of miles per tank and record the litres used to fill it
up. Over time the above figure is fairly constant.

Interestingly, on long M-way journeys - Leeds to Reading I can achieve
40+MPG - this in a J reg SRi with the close ratio box.

ALso, it should be noted that I do tend to travel at around 70-80MPH on
motorways and I don't particularly 'hang about'.

2124.733Mpg for a SRIFAILTE::THOMSONSWed Jul 28 1993 03:1315
A couple uf us in our office have SRI,s H reg with around 52,000 miles on the
clock and both week in week out return 33 mpg , fill up the tank divide by the
miles = 33mpg .

The interesting thing is that mine tends to be fast down the motorway then stuck
in traffic I dont tend to do many private miles , my friend tends to be on more
country roads but I would say he drives slower but 33mpg.

I am interested in what MPG an ASTRA or CAVALIER 1.7TD or FRONTERA 2.3TD would
achieve over a full tank driving them in a realistic day to day manner not a
what could be achieved doing a constant 56MPH

I get between 25 mpg average around town, up to 32 mpg on a long trip.

Long trips tend to be fast, as I thing travelling is a waste of time,
so 32mpg is very good considering the speed.

I took 2 passengers and all our camping gear to Bournemouth and back
the other weekend and go 32mpg. The journey took about 1hr 45min each
way.

    I used to achieve approx 32 - 35 mpg from my Cavalier GSi, H-Reg, 45K
    miles.

    Probably 50% 80Mph 40% 35Mph or less 10% Standstill.!!!!

    I constantly got about 35MPG from my Automatic Cavalier 2.0 CDi when I
    had it. Although my journeys were all long ones of at least 100+ miles
    as my job has a lot of travel associated with it. However, now with a
    manual Mazda 626 2.0 16v I get about 40/45 MPG.

I get 40mpg from a mixture of town, country and motorway. It goes down to
38mpg if I'm cruising at 95-100mph. Its most econonomical cruising speed is
80-85mph.

Ok,

I'll come clean!

On long motorway or A road drives, I get 34 mpg, However, a lot of my driving
is 4 miles to work (shame on me!), and so I usually get about 32mpg.

My motorway driving is 85mph (usually), and I *do* hang about.

2124.15Jap engines?PEKING::GERRYTThu Jul 29 1993 21:096
    Is the petrol engine used in the Vauxhall range a Japanese unit like
    the Isuzu deisel units?

    If so, that may explain some of the greater economies.

Why? Does Japan own all the patents on technology that leads to fuel economy?

At the recent Vauxhall day, I tried a Corsa 1.4 Si. The 5 mile journey around
Farleigh Wallop was quite a good recommended route.

I averaged about 160 mph, and got about 70mpg out of it!

Seriously though, I thought the Corsa was quite good, but I have become spoilt
by power steering, and missed it.

    Their patented method is to chop off the two redundant wheels...

I tried the Corsa 1.2 Merit at the Vauxhall day. This car is head & shoulders
over the competition. It is cute and really good fun to drive. The shape is
very practical, and space everywhere is excellent for a small car.

I think it is probably the closest thing to a Twingo around at the moment!

I also tried the Cavalier V6, which was incredibly smooth, and would be a
superb cruiser.

I also tried the Cavalier 16V SRi, and I am really glad I didn't get one.
The engine, whilst good, is too much for the wheels. I lost grip on all 4
wheels very easily, something I don't think the Clio or 19 16V would do.

Overall, I'd like the Cavalier for cruising and the Corsa around town.

2124.20My various cars....NEWOA::CROME_AWed Aug 11 1993 17:3018
	My first Cavalier 2.0 SRi was abysmal, no matter what I did it did 27mpg.

	My next Cavalier SRi (G reg) was alot better, it averaged on a daily
basis 36 mpg, on a run about 42 mpg.

	Then I had a 2.0 CDi Cavalier, this was superb, 40 was the average and
on a run 45 mpg was easily obtainable sitting at 85 - 90 mph.

	The next car was very sad.... A Citroen 1.9 Volcane, 28 was about the
average - if I was kind to it - and on a run 30 mpg - very sad car !

	My present car impresses, 2.0 GSi Astra, on average it returns 36 mpg,
and on a run it will return 40 + depending on traffic, not bad for a hot hatch !

	I measure all the figure by the miles/gallons put in the tank with the
execption of the GSi - this has a trip computer.

    I have to agree with you The Gsi is good in that respect.

    On average I get about 30 around town but I can get into the low 40's
    on a run across to the west coast.

I have to disagree about the Corsa Merit 1.2, I had one as a hire car and
drove from Aberdeen down to Edinburgh via Perth and some very pretty scenery.

The handling on fast windey roads was abysmal, the power non-existent - show
it a hill and it groaned slowly -the seat was bum-achingly short. It didn't
seem to use a lot of fuel - I never got to measure it.

	Tim

	PS The Japanese have a perormance engine that will do 100mpg, they
are releasing the technology onto the market 5mpg at a time :-) <think about
it - not so silly as it seems>

Well, my Nova SR (1.4) returns on average I would say about 42 mpg.
The best I have had was about 48 (but this was travelling @ 56 mph - boring)

The worst has been about 30, when I gutted it from Edinburgh to Glasgow
(100 + all the way)

Here was me thinking that the Sri's of the world were petrol guzzling monsters
from another planet !!
