    HELP!!
    
    I said I would demonstrate the power of notes to a customer, he has a
    problem with his SAAB 99 Turbo and I said I would enter it in here and
    see if we could get some suggestions, the problem is that it runs fine
    offload/light load but if you load it heavily ie. try to mantain or
    accelerate uphill it miss-fires and coughs and splutters, I do not know
    SAAB's at all but it has electronic ignition fuel injection and a turbo.
    
    My theory is a vaccuum advance/retard problem.
    
    any other suggestions will be greatfully recieved.

    	Funnily enough.....my Fiesta started doing this the day after you
    drove it....you didnt by any chance drive the Saab as well did you?
    
    	Seriously though...my car was exhibiting exactly the same problems
    	that you mentioned...this was a re-occurence of a problem I last
    	had about 30k miles ago...then it was a incorrectly adjusted
    	turbo wastegate...this time it was " that the ECU had forgotten its
    	settings after a service and it needs time to learn these
    settings"......I left the car with the garage for an afternoon and it
    all appears to be OK now.........I'm sorry but I do find the latest
    explianation about the ECU forgetting its settings kinda hard to
    believe! Comments anyone......................?

    How old is this SAAB?
    
    It may, very likely, have something to do with the pre-ignition control
    devices SAAB fitted.
    On older, read more mileage or short-distance use model, gets rather
    prone to pre-ignition. Pulling heavy loads from low revs, like slugging
    uphill, is exactly the condition under which this is bound to show up.
    The electronics will try to compensate but under these conditions
    nothing short from cutting the ignition out alltogether will help!
    
    Solution:
    1. Use the highest grade petrol available
    2. "Decoke": Short distance model: give it a very good burn out 
                 High mileage one: ask your garage
    3. Have them check the base settings and all the "anti-pinking"
    controls.

    Thanks for the advice, the car is old its a "W" I think but the guy
    refuses to use it for short journey's and uses a bicycle where poss.
    and it goes from essex to chester and back every week, this problem has
    not crept up it has just occurred more like a defect than a decoke type
    problem, but this anti-pink device sounds interesting if it has one.

    Have you thought about the possibility of it being one of the spark
    plugs breaking down under load - it is a possibility even if it was
    only serviced a month ago.

    Could be the fuel filter, if this hasn't been changed regularly.  The
    99 has that tiny little one on the left wing.  However a similar problem during
    warmup on my Saab 900 Turbo (135,000 miles) was cured by cleaning the
    distributor cap inside and out.  High compression blew the sparks out
    until the damp goo on the cap dried out with the engine heat.
