1971.0. "Sunday driving" by FORTY2::MITCHELL () Mon Dec 21 1992 13:09

I think I've found one reason why Sunday shopping is illegal - the
seeming inability of people to follow the normal rules of the road on
a Sunday! I rode into Reading about 11am on Sunday morning (yes, I
know it was silly to even try :-) ) I can only presume from the way
most people were behaving that they thought that they were the only
vehicle on the road. When it came to parking, most of the motorcycle only
places were fully occupied by cars. I ended up squeezing the bike ito a
space, - knowing full well that there was no way that the car I had
parked in front of could get out, unless the car behind him moved. I
left the bike feeling a mixture of concern, that I might come back to
find the bike on it's side, - guilt, because I'd blocked the car in -
and "serves them right". Riding home was just as bad - cars double
parked all over the place - people walking out into the road without
looking - forgetting how to behave at roundabouts -

I too witnessed some truly spectacularly bad driving on my journey from
Crewe to (and around) Birmingham and back again. Roundabouts seemed to
be causing the most problems, with cars waiting at an empty roundabout,
then pulling out in front of the next car that came along. Amazing!

Think yourself lucky. When it scomes to driving in Basingstoke, the
seven days of the week are:

Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, Sunday, Sunday and Sunday!

One problem, I think, is that so many people are used to crawling along
nose to tail for six days of the week - that faced with the relatively
clear and open road on a Sunday - they don't know what to do. They've
forgotten what the accellerator pedal is for - and 3 to 5th gear have
seized solid through lack of use... :-)
