1906.0. "Metro Turbo. Exhaust problems ..." by AEOEN2::MATTHEWS (M&M Enterprises, the CATCH 22) Mon Oct 05 1992 14:37

I am experiencing some difficulties fitting an exhaust to a 1983 Metro
Turbo.

About three months ago, I replaced the complete exhaust system. All was
well for a few weeks and then the joint between the manifold and exhaust
started to blow. The joint used here is very similar to the type used on
old BMC cars ... the end of the exhaust pipe has a lip which fits onto
the manifold, and a clamp bolts around the two to hold it all together.
There is no gasket between the exhaust pipe and manifold.

Anyway, when I fitted it, I used some Gun-gum jointing compound both between
the manifold and exhaust pipe, and on the inside of the clamp. Actually getting
the clamp tight is VERY difficult because of the very restricted space.

I have since tried a further three times to get this joint to seal, so far
without success ... it lasts a few days, or even weeks, and then starts
blowing again.

I suppose I must be doing something wrong, but for the life of me can't see
what.

Has anyone else experienced such a problem, and if so how did you solve it ?
Is the orientation of the clamp important ? With the engine being transverse,
the natural things for the engine to do on acceleration is to move backwards.
Since the exhaust is fixed to the bodywork and the manifold to the engine,
when the engine moves, the joint is put under stress. Perhaps this is what
is causing it to blow, but if so, how does the factory overcome the problem ?
(the engine mountings are in good condition so the movement isn't enormous)

    Re .0

I had the same problem on my Mini Estate (sadly no longer with us). I
replaced the bushes in the engine top stay even though they appeared
OK. I also wrapped some exhaust bandage around the two flanges before
fitting the clamp. A combination of these two appeared to solve the
problem. Incidentally the exhaust, as purchased, was not really the
correct shape and this contributed to the problems. I had to "bend it a
bit" to get a good fit !

    Hope this helps,

    Steve.
