1889.0. "Fitting a radio to an old Astra" by KRAKAR::WARWICK (Trevor Warwick) Tue Sep 15 1992 21:53

The original Philips radio/cassette fitted to my MK I (yes, MK I) Astra
is becoming unreliable, and I've been looking around for a second-hand
replacement. It's also an extremely low-functionality model, so it
would be nice to get a better one, rather than a straight
    replacement.

However, it appears that the hole in the dashboard isn't the right size
to take standard sized modern radios (i.e., a Blaupunkt Melbourne). The
hole isn't quite wide enough, but could be filed down. However, it
definitely isn't deep enough, and the new radio can't be pushed in all
    the way.

Are there any solutions to this, such as:

    - radios that definitely fit.
    - extra fixing kits so that a standard size can be fitted.
    - etc. ?

From talking to a couple of people, it sounds like more recent
    Vauxhalls also have similar problems.

Not deep enough - is this because the radio box will not fit inside or because
the aerial connection comes straight out of the back and snags at the back of
the opening?

If it is the latter then you can get an aerial connector that makes a right
angle as soon as it comes out of the radio.

I had this problem in an opel manta - I believe it is
part of the heater assembly which gets in the way. The
only solution a car stereo shop could come up with
was a plastic extension box which stuck out the front
of the dash by about 1". Clunky, but it meant you could
fit a DIN sized stereo. This was in an A reg manta.

You may be able to find one of these sleeves in a car
stereo shop. But then again it may stick out too much
on the astra - it wasn't too bad in thae manta.

I fitted a DIN size radio to a MK1 Astra by using a fitting sleeve from
Halfords - not too expensive - but had to accept that the radio
protruded from the dash by no more than 1/2 inch. I could not get at
whatever was at the back of the aperture to make it accept the full
    depth of the radio.

Emboldened by this information, I went into a car stereo shop this
morning. They sell, for 14.95, a piece of replacement dashboard
moulding that takes a DIN sized radio. It's the bit of plastic through
which the radio, heater controls and fog light switches protrude. I'll
also look at what Halfords have.

    Thanks for the help,

    Trevor
