1888.0. "Montego replacement?" by PEKING::GERRYT () Tue Sep 15 1992 18:22

Has anyone any details of the replacement foe the Montego due out late
this autumn or early next year?
I was talking with a friend who works at Rover, and he said it was
called the Synchro (sp?) and would be something like a slightly smaller
    800 series?

Anyone seen any snatch photos in any car mags or any other details??

I think its going to be called the 600 series and will look like
a cross between the facelifted 400 (to be seen at the motor show)
    and the 800.

Rover will also introduce a 200 series with the Vitesse turbo engine
(180bhp) and 2wd at the show. Should be fun!

As far as I am aware, the Rover 600 will be an all new model, not a Montego
replacement. A&M had some sketches a while back, saying that the 600
will come in 2.0 and 2.3 enigine sizes, if I remember correctly and no estate variant.

I think the Synchro is a Honda. The 600 will be based on the Honda Accord (?).

Look in this months issue of Car for pictures of the 600
the engine range will be hondas 2.0 and 2.3 as in the
new shape prelude. there may be a v8 or v6 version of
the K series. The synchro will be the honda varient, the
differences will be similar in scale to the rover200
honda concerto model ranges, ie more kit on the honda
much nicer interior on the rover.

Well... yes it will be an all new model BUT it will be a replacement
(ie not based on) for the model currently filling this market segment,
    the Maestrego [:-)].

I believe (but I could be wrong) that Syncro was the development/field
test name for the car. Although it was developed jointly with Honda
(what isn't ?) and there will be a Honda version, it isn't based
directly on the current Accord. I believe that naming will follow
current practice and it will be a "600".

(But then again what do I know ?)

There's another sketch in this weeks A&M of the 600 along with sketches of
several other cars due out next year which all look the same - the Saab 900(0),
the Renault 21 replacement, the new Citroen BX, etc...

It also says that the Maestro will get a turbo diesel engine currently used in the
montego,. So from this, I deduce that the 600 will run alongside the Maestro
and Montego.

But surely not for long as I believe a deal has been done to sell the
production line to Russia (or somewhere) ??
From where they'll probable be sold back to where they came from
    originally, just like Lada's (Fiats)
    			  Early Yugo's (Fiats)
    			  Hindustani Ambassadors (Morris Oxfords)

    Re: .4

In this months (Oct) "CAR" magazine there is a picture of the new UK
produced Accord (made in Swindon ?), it mentions that this is the model
which was jointly developed with Rover, who's version will be known as
the 600. From what I remember it won't share any body panels, and in
fact I believe that the Rover version will be more striking (ie less
    bland).
