1860.0. "Feedback on Golf 1.9 TD (Umwelt) required" by DGMT00::HANCOCK () Tue Aug 11 1992 13:45

    	Hi,
I would be interested to hear from any Golf 1.9 TD (Umwelt)
drivers out there. I have had one now for 8 weeks, done 4500 miles
and would make the following observations against my two previous
    	cars,an Audi 80 TD (1.6) and a Golf 1.6 TD (series 2)

    	1.	Performance.Very sluggish, noisy and harsh through the gears.

    	2.	Consumption. Very dissapointing.I commute 45 miles each
   		way,some country roads,some motorway.I drive briskly,but
not accelerating hard. The Golf II gave 48-53mpg,the Audi
gave 47-50 mpg,the new Golf is giving 41-44. On a holiday
cruising at 70-75 with two bikes on the roof it dropped to
34mpg !! Incidentally at one point on a fairly minor hill
I was reduced to 55mph in fourth gear ...

    	3.	Noise level. At 70 mph I struggle to hear the (excellent)
stereo system,in the Audi you could hold a normal
conversation at 85mph,and the series II golf was OK-ish

On the plus side, usual VW build quality (except one rear door has
"sagged" on the hinges and baulks when being shut (fairly minor).
    	Handling excellent,stereo excellent,comfortable etc etc .
Absolutely no smoke on hard acceleration,a real plus...

I intend to raise the fuel consumption issues at the 5000 mile
service.Have I got a bad one,or is this the price we pay for a
    	more environmentally sound vehicle ?

    					Cheers
    							Mick

Spoke to an ex-DECcie last night whos' father in law has been running
his Umwelt for over a year now. No complaints about consumption, he
gets about, or just below (-1 0r -2), 50mpg. The quality of the build is thought
to be excellent and the ride adequate for the length of journeys
travelled (this guy's retired now so no high mileage useage).

Not sure about turbo kick-in speeds but the thing about the Umwelt is
that it uses the larger sized engine so the bhp is still 75 or there
abouts, which is I believe petrol car performance.
