1834.0. "CLIO vs ZX????" by NZOMIS::TURRELL (nil et barstardum est vert il carborundum) Mon Jul 20 1992 08:11

hi folks,

did a dir/tit= and found the ZX note but with all the
Volcane owners bashing their chess I couldn't really find what I
wanted. :-)

Am about to do some driving on holiday through Europe -
esp' France and Italy, maybe down to Monaco. Just my wife and I and the
2 packs. We are going to get one of the European hire deals from
Citroen and Renault - therein lies the question.

Prices are within quids of each other for the 1.4L Clio and
1.4 ZX (Reflex?). We are looking for something that doesnt buzz at crusing
speeds (whatever they are in Europe!), comfortable seats, enough room
for 2 adults with bags and comfort, quality build, reasnobly
comfortable steering (PAS or not), good lumbar etc....................

Also anyone tried/heard of the 1.1L engines in these cars?
Do they differ dramaticaly from the 1.4's?

Appreciate any thoughts/ideas/opinions/......

cheers
Al

1834.1Much of a muchnessTASTY::JEFFERYI do not think you wanted to do that!Mon Jul 20 1992 13:587
The ZX has more space as it is bigger.

I gather that the ZX has better ride.

I've tried the ZX Volcane and the Clio and liked both.

1834.3Straight from the shop...NZOMIS::TURRELLnil et barstardum est vert il carborundumTue Jul 21 1992 06:3328
hi Malcolm,

the rental deal is offered straight from the manufacturer.

If you are a non-resident/dont earn Francs/rental period<180days
there is a tax break in French law that says a local manufacturer can
'sell' at normal list price less all tax and allowances. Renault and
Citroen have adopted this to provide a cheap (approx 10 pounds a day
for a ZX 1.4L) rental service of a new car with all insurance/AA/delivery
service costs included for overseas visitors (just encourages foreign
capital in the country I guess)

We looked at all the options that would get us into a car for a
period and this was the cheapest (irrespective of it being the simplest
and new car, less hassles with insurance's etc...)

Unfortunately New Zealand does not have a big representation of
Citroen or Renault so neither the ZX or Clio are avilable here - hence
the question.

Probably doesnt help at all huh??

regards
Al

Can you post details of the French rental scheme you intend to use.

How did you locate the outlet, was it through an agent in New Zealand?
Is there a minimum rental period, you just mention less than 180 days?
Does it operate through airports such as Charles de Gaulle or Nice?

Cheers
Dave
1834.5The ZX is bigger...HEWIE::RUSSELLHAL -> IBM; VMS -> Windows/NTTue Jul 21 1992 13:5019
as .1 said, the ZX is bigger than the Clio, but if there is only the two of
you that probably doesn't matter, unless you have a fair amount of luggage.

As both are hatchbacks, you could fold the rear seats down, and cover the
luggage with a blanket or something, but it could still be an open invitation
to a thief. The ZX has a good size boot.

The performance of either will be "acceptable" without being stunning (e.g,
Citroen don't even import the 1.1 ZX into the UK) but both will cruise at
a steady 80 without any problems.

So, you can either get a low spec, bigger ZX, or (probably a higher spec)
Clio, which will be smaller, and so easier to park, and slightly more
economical.

The CLio is about the same size as the Ford Fiesta, while the ZX is about
the size of the Ford Escort, if those models are sold in NZ.

1834.6Volcane and Reflex chest-basher!SUBURB::DELANYSTue Jul 21 1992 17:2813
Well, I'm a ZX Volcane chest-basher: I have one as my lease car... But
my wife has a 1.4 Reflex! So I reckon I can comment...

In some ways, the Reflex is a more 'rounded' (in ability terms) car
than the Volcane. It's also noticeably larger than the Clio in the boot
department. On the odd occasion I drive the Reflex, I always get out of
it feeling pleasantly surprised at its dynamics: you'd never guess it
was bottom of its range.

It's a great car!

hi folks, (Dave (.4), Mal (.7))

Choice is ...........................................Citroen!

Only other reason ($price) is the amount of Reflex recommendations I
read here and in other notes. Clio seems to be an unknown quantity.

Information I had: (only NZ addresses/phone#'s etc...)

"Renault Eurodrive Tax Free Formula"

MAARS AKLAGMM

Minimum period rental = 15 days. Maximum period = 180 days.

e.g. Clio 1.4L @ 23-27 days = NZ$70.00 (exchange this a.m. was .3318 to
the pound)

e.g.2 16V Clio 1.7L @ 23-27 days = NZ$80.00

misc - Clio's dont require 10K service. The other models do (R5, 19 and
21 variants). Rates dont include fuel, oil, services, personal effects
insurance. Car delivered for pick-up free of charge to the "Renault
DVSE centre, 186 avenue Jean-Jaures 75019 Paris" and other nominated

"CITROEN European Self-Drive"
Citroen Holiday Leasing
...Auckland, NZ
Phone = 649-276-1440

XM V6 for 28 days @ NZ$255.00

misc - basically the same as for Renault. Free delivery/pick-up to
Bordeaux airport/Calais terminal/Charles De Gaulle/Paris/Lyon/etc...
Also special deals on budget accomodation (vouchers).
Standard pick-up from central "Citroen Paris Delivery Centre (Citroen
Champ de Mars)". No free 1K service (as with Clio).

I guess a call to your local Renault or Citroen dealer is the way to
go.

Good luck!!
