1702.0. "Mazda MX-3" by BAHTAT::HILTON (How's it going royal ugly dudes?) Mon Feb 24 1992 12:21

    Well I went looking at the Mazda MX-3 over the weekend as a next lease
    mobile. The 1.8 version is probably too expensive, but I thought the
    1.6i would be ok, then I checked the performance figures! It has an
    automatic gear box, does 0-62 in 14 seconds and a max speed of 105.
    This seems very sluggish, your average siera, cavilier etc is faster.

    Has anyone driven one, owned one. Comments etc would be welcomed. I
    tried What Car but they have only tested the 1.8 version.

    ho ho. 0-62 in 14 seconds? I had a Triumph Dolomite with a 1500cc
    engine that went quicker than that! :^)

    What a SPORTS car eh?

    Comments? It looks like a cross between a Celica and a CRX (but with
    none of the good points of either! - Well ok, the Celica has no good
    points, but the CRX has!) :^) No seriously. The 1.6 is a car for the
    kind of people who used to buy 1.6 autoboxed Capris (or 1.3s - Did
    people really BUY them?). It's an all looks and no go car, even by the
    standards of the Capri era!

    That's too bad to hear, over in Canada you can have either version in
    automatic or manual. BTW I've tried a Black GS over here (1.8 manual)
    and it's was a lot of fun.

    I HAVE TEST DRIVEN THE MX3 AUTOMATIC WITH THE 1.6 LITER 6 CYLINDER
    (SMALLEST PRODUCTION 6 BANGER IN WORLD PER POPULAR SCIENCE) AND IT IS A
    BIT SLUGGISH FOR AN INSTANT OF A SECOND BUT THEN KICKS IN NICELY. IT IS
    EXTREMELY SMOOTH. WAS TOLD BY THE DEALER THAT THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
    THE AUTOMATIC AND THE STANDARD IS LIKE NIGHT AND DAY. UNFORTUNATELY
    THEY HAD NO STANDARDS LEFT. MADE MY MX6 LOOK SLOW, BUT THEN MINE IS
    STUCK WITH CALIFORNIA EMISSIONS (CONSIDERED TO BE THE STRICTEST) WHERE
    AS THE MX3 WAS A NEW MEXICO CAR (FEDERAL STANDARDS). THE DECKED OUT
    VERSION PUTS OUT 140 HP, WHICH IS A FAIR AMOUNT FOR THAT SIZE CAR. I
    CAN'T IMAGINE IT RUNNING 0-60 AS SLOW AS 14 SECONDS IN THIS COUNTRY.
    IN FACT I THOUGHT IT TO BE AROUND 9. READ SOMEWHERE THAT MAZDA HAD TO
    BE CAREFUL AS THE POTENTIAL OF THE ENGINE COULD EASILY PUT IT IN LINE
    WITH THE RX7.  MATT MCCULLOUGH/ALBUQUERQUE,NM,USA

    In the UK (where the original noter is)...

    Autobox <-> 4 cylinder engine.

    Manual <-> 6 cylinder engine.

    The combination tested in .7 doesn't exist in the UK.

1702.10I love my MX3!!!POLAR::PALFREYMANSat Mar 21 1992 11:3234
    Drive it and you'll believe it!

    I've had my 1.8L manual MX3 for about 1 1/2 months now and I love it.

    Don't be swayed be anyone who tells you the MX3(1.8) is sluggish.
    Believe me this car moves! Granted, the MX3 is no supercar. Lots of
    other cars will beat it in speed and acceleration but that's not only
    what driving is about.

    The MX3 is, as all the reviews say, extremely fun to drive. The
    suspension, handling and braking are incredible. I picked mine up,
    fully loaded (anti-lock brakes, sunroof, 10-disc Sony CD changer,
    cassette, ski/bike rack, f/r moulded mud flaps, rear window shade,
    custom floor mats) for $22,000 Canadian including pst/gst (tax).

    The standard features on the 1.8L are very generous: tilt-steering,
    power mirrors, power door locks, map pockets, am/fm cassette, and more.

    What pleases me most about the MX3 is that you really feel that you're
    driving a well engineered and quality vehicle. Nothing about the MX3
    feels cheap or poorly designed.

    My favorite place to drive the MX3 is in mid to heavy traffic on the
    highway. Weaving in and out of traffic, spurts from 120 to 160 KHM are
    a real blast. Really gets the heart pumping.

    Also, I've noticed that the MX3 is a real eye catcher too. People
    always do a double-take when I drive by. At least three times so far
    people have mistaken it for a Porche.

    Do yourself a favour. Take an MX3 out for a test drive. You'll have a
    grin a mile wide when you're done!!! :)

1702.11MX3 observations.FUTURS::SAXBYIs it friday yet?Tue Nov 16 1993 16:2115

    Just took an MX-3 out for a test drive.

    Good points - nice handling, very comfortable front seats, zingy (the
    only word I can think of to describe it) engine, good acceleration
    above 4000 rpm, fairly quiet, precise gearchange, good front and
    luggage room.

    Bad points - ride a little choppy, back seats look a little spartan for
    long journeys and rear headroom is restrictive for my 5'9", a bit
    gutless low down (which suprised me for a 6).

    Looks - You decide...

    Anyone got a price recently on the MAZDA MX3 1.8 24v V6 Coupe.

    I was quoted a price of approx. #4130 for the 1.6 16v automatic
    version, but it doesn't interest me.
    Have any of you driven the MX3 as I am waiting on the local dealer
    getting one in, and I'd be interested in your feedback?

    Gary.
