| There is nothing to stop the disconnection, for a time, and
reconnection later, when you wish to sell, of the odometers on XJ6 and
XJ12 ranges. The fact that they are electronic presents no more than a
30 minute problem to a competent person. Given the current state of
the used car market in the UK, don't know about elsewhere, a very low
mileage used XJ will make more money than a high mileage model.

| Any of you recent Jag owners need advice, drop me a line, and I can
generally get pretty good answers. A friend I have known since I was
12 years old is now a Jaguar *Master Technician* at our local
dealership, and is happy to answer questions.... (hotair::Davis)
For XJ6's, his comments were...
1988 and later speedometers *cannot* be reset unless they are sent back
to the instrument cluster manufacturer. At that point they are reset
to zero and tested for one mile. (Blasting into ROM I would guess).
There were problems with some of these instruments, and Jaguar replaced
some of them under warranty. At that point the car was given a new
instrument cluster, with speedometer, and reset mileage. The car was
also given a sticker, affixed to the door panel that said the mileage had
been reset (US Law). Of course, it is simple for someone to later pull
that sticker off.
As for disconnecting the speedometer, he said it could be done, but
would probably severely affect the performance of the car! This is
because many other car components are controlled by speed and get that
information directly from the instrument cluster. An example is the
fule injection in an XJ6. When the speedometer is disconnected, the
fuel injection no longer has road speed input, determines that a
failure has occurred, and goes into "open loop". Basically, it
doesn't work well, and is in 'limp home' mode.
Hope this helps....
As you can guess, my friend has a WEALTH of information in his head.
He recently loaned me the engine lifting plate to pull the engine out
of my XK150 and the clutch alignment tool (gotta buy one of those
someday...).
Hope the above info helps!
