1570.0. "Are Company Car Drivers Full of it?" by TASTY::NISBET (DELETE/TOO_LATE DOCDB.DAT;) Wed Oct 16 1991 19:09

I was reading the Telegraph motoring section this morning. An insurance
company advert offers lower premiums to private motorists since
'Company Car Drivers may not treat their vehicles as well as you do".

So what do you say all you Fleet Car drivers? Accident rates for
company cars are higher than average. Are you bad, dangerous, reckless
    drivers or what?

To construe this note as being a case of sour grapes and jealousy just
because I don't have a company car would be completely wrong. Probably.

It doesn't take a great mind to work out that company car drivers are
likely to do 2 or 3 times the mileage that private motorists cover.

Therefore of course they are statistically a greater risk.

From evidence in this notesfile, company car drivers are more reluctant
to spend money on anti-theft devices such as alarms. Hence in this
	case the statement is true.

Is it or is it not the _owner_ of a vehicle that
is responsible for providing anti-theft devices ?

As a company car driver of a car in a high risk catagory, I am
concerned that the company is not interested in making it a little
more by equipping it with an alarm.

    Roy

PS I guess Hertz is the _owner_ but it is the company that has to fork
       out for it.

Re the note on company cars mileage.

While it may be 'statistically true' that MOST company car drivers
do a greater mileage than the 'average' private motorist, you only have
to look around the car park of any railway station on a mainline into
London to realise that a lot of company car drivers do about 10 miles a
    week in their cars!

Maybe 'the company' should reflect the cost of these 'high-risk
category' cars in the preferred list and just double their price ?

After all, alarms don't stop determined car thieves - do they ?

'the company' already is loading cars with a higher insurance risk.

Haven't you read the new car scheme guidelines Paul ?

On statistics:

Perhaps company cars drivers do on average more miles per year. But I would
have thought that the important ration was that of company cars to other
vehicles on the road at any given time. If this is the same as the accident
rate, then I would admit that the statistics are a sham. Unless the
statistics take this into account.

1570.11well, I'm feeling cynical today.....VOGON::MITCHELLEBeware of the green meanieThu Oct 17 1991 19:0121

As I think has been mentioned before in this conference - you don't
have to go looking at statistics to get info on company car drivers -
just listen to many of them....

    It doesn't matter - it's only a company car....

I wouldn't take my own car along that track....

I wouldn't take my own car to xxxx it might get pinched - but...

I wouldn't drive my own car this hard but ...

I banged the door on the wall when I opened it - but it doesn't
matter I'm not paying to get it fixed....

I don't car what they charge to fix/service it - I'm not paying...

    Get the idea?

Re: .11

One nice thing about the Digital scheme is that your do have a choice of car,
so on the whole you tend to take more pride in your car and look after it.

If we all got Cavalier 1.6GL's then i am sure that they would be treated
more like the "traditional" company car (100mph in the "fast" lane of
motorways, 2 feet from the car in front, jacket hanging from hook above
rear side window ...).

Lets hope that the scheme continues to encourage a caring attitude!

I don't think this is necessarily true in the majority of cases. -
maybe the people in this file do - but the fact that they are noting
here means that they have an interest in cars anyway.

The other side of this is that people can choose cars which they could
not afford to insure themselves, which can give inexperienced drivers
access to very powerful cars - many of which are damaged shortly into
their lease life.... (I don't really want to open up an old rat-hole
here, but I believe this could be one of the reasons that the new
scheme has a separate insurance bit)

I'm not sure I'm with you ... the base note is my perception of company car
drivers from experience and listening to other colleagues. My later note is
an admission that the statistics may be biased to make company car drivers
look worse than they are by not taking into account higher mileages.

I'm such a tolerant well rounded flexibale fence sitting
consider-other-viewpoints lovely chap it's not true.
