1561.0. "Where to re-thread a sump?" by FORTY2::MANN () Mon Oct 07 1991 15:31

Hia

Can anyone recommed an engineering place where I can get a new thread drilled
into my sump (around the Reading Area). Also what it might cost ?

Oil is leaking from the sump nut of my car (VW Gold 1.5 1981) because the
thread on the actual sump is gone.

Cheers

There used to be a rebore/regrind place behind the Caversham Laundry - M & J
Pistons, I think. Anyone know where it's gone since Caversham Laundry did the
Phoenix bit ??

Rather than the fuss of re-threading, what about a copper washer -
sufficiently broad to tighten the sump plug to.

really Mark !

A helicoil is a thread insert that enables a stripped thread to be
inexpensively brought back to life.

It is a cheaper option than boring out the old thread and tapping a new
(larger) one in.

It should not really be used where pressure will be brought to bear on the new
"thread" i.e. spark plugs.

M & J are still there. Just over the Reading Bridge on the Caversham
side opposite a petrol station, and set about 50 yards back from the
    main road.

I wouldn't suggest extra copper washers as you've obviously only a few
threads left... If too many spacers are added the urge to over tighten
will be even greater than before, and in the end it will simply strip
    bolt and hole threads.

Helicoil inserts can be bought from Edmunds-Walker. They're in the
first block of industrial units at the back of Portman Road. See also
    Yellow Pages.
