1550.0. "Cause for alarm ?!" by HAMPS::TAYLOR_P () Tue Sep 17 1991 14:46

    I have just purchased an 18 month old Cavalier CDi which comes with an
    alarm system factory fitted. All was well for 4 or 5 days until I
    deciced I ought to know about all its functions ! It has a push button
    beside the ultra sonic transducers in the car and this button is
    supposed to mute the ultrasonic detection (if for instance you wanted
    to leave a pet in the car). Well ever since I pressed it inquisitively
    the transducers have produced a regular ticking and create a pressure
    sensation in the ears - presumably they are emitting ultrasound. This
    is continuous and setting/cancelling the alarm has no effect on it
    although the alarm status light functions normally. Disconnecting the
    battery does stop the effect, but reconnecting it restores the problem.
    My nearest Vauxhall dealer is A.C. Barnes and is so far baffled. Can
    anyone advise ?

    Thanks,

           Phil.

    Have you pressed the button a few more times .....
1550.2Tick in the box ?HAMPS::TAYLOR_PFri Oct 04 1991 15:177
    Yes, I've tried pressing the button several more times.

    I've also listened very carefully to several other Cavaliers with alarms
    to discover about 50% have a continuous clicking, though usually quieter
    than mine. My conclusion is that it is not a malfunction but a feature
    and that I probably have more accute hearing, especially for problem noises
    after I have just bought a car !!!

    Now that I'm out again, I can confirm that the ultrasonics do work,
    when they are supposed to (i.e. locking the car without pressing the
    "disarm ultrasonics" button) and don't work when they are supposed not to
    (i.e. pressing the disarm ultrasonics button before locking the car).
    What I don't understand is why they transmit continuously. The clicking
    is there and sounds just the same whether the alarm is on or not.

    Obviously doesn't turn off the ultasonic detector, only the triggering
    by detection.
