1498.0. "Ford Sierra 1.8GL " by JUMBLY::COOPER () Wed Jul 10 1991 18:03

I have a 1988 ex-company, high-mileage (72,500) Ford Sierra 1.8GL. I have tested
the fule consumption on several occasions and cannot get more than 25-26 mpg.
According to Used Cars Magazine Urban Consumption should be around 35 mpg
and 45 mpg aat 50 mph. As anybody experienced low consumption from their models.

I have a 1987 low-mileage (30,000) Ford Sierra 1.6GL Estate.
I drive as hard as the car lets me, foot on the board at all times that the
conditions allow, and *always* get 31 mpg.
I would have thought that yours is a little excessive, 'cos my engine is smaller
and older and has a bigger weight to pull.

    I have had the mixture checked and this was okay, and recently had a
    12,000 mile service, but this has not altered the mpg

Valves worn?
Piston rings worn/broken?
Head gasket blown?

Do you feel like you're having to use more throttle than should be necessary?

Is there water in the oil? Petrol in the oil? Oil visible in the exhaust pipe?

    The exhaust seems okay, and the plugs were not black when last service
    was done. Does not tend to burn oil excessively

1498.535mpg Sapphire 1.6LMEALA::JACKMANThu Jul 11 1991 18:1811
    I own 1988 Sapphire 1.6L with 63,000 miles up. The car has been
    serviced at all the recommended intervals, has nice new tyres and it
    has always returned 35mpg since new. Driving conditions are typically
    25 mile jaunts to work averaging about 70 mph in fifth gear. I once got
    just over 40mpg on a 120 mile run but I never managed to recreate those
    conditions again !

    25mpg sounds very low indeed.

    Go for a compression test - this should tell you if the
    bores/pistons/valves are clapped!
