1495.0. "Old Austin Race Car and Tire Info Sought" by TSGDEV::WAITE (Things are fine in Mt. Idy she goes on) Tue Jul 09 1991 17:59

(I can't seem to find an appropriate topic....but mod please move if necessary)

Met an ex-pat at a vintage race meeting in New Hamphsire last week who was
driving an Austin Ulster, vintage late 1920's. He was pretty sure it was an
original factory team car. If anyone has any info on these cars it would be
appreciated.

Also, he is looking for a source for 3.50 x 15 tires (racing type preferred).
Currently he is using industrial fork lift truck tires as that was all he
has been able to find in the right size.

Read somewhere that Dunlop has a lot of old tyre types back in production
to meet the needs of the classic car owners looking for a "period" look
and feel !!!

>Is your friend going to race the ulster?

He already races it here in the US. I gather he either brought it with him
from the UK or had it imported. I was just curious about the heritage: ie.
did Austin build them as factory race cars.

As for the tires. Thanks for the Dunlop hint. I do remember reading that
they were making new 'old' tires, in India I think. I'll check that out.

A quick check in Hemmings motor news ....

Coker tire said no to 3.50x15's. (Said they were REAL small!)

Universal tire has 4.50 x 15's (might work depending upon the width)
    for 165 dollars apiece.

1495.61952 Austin A-40 saloon????MKOTS4::SCHREIBER_GRelax...homebrew picks up on bad karmaTue Mar 09 1993 18:5410
While this is not a vintage Austin racer, I thought I'd ask here.
Over the weekend I spotted a 1952 Austin A-40 saloon. Very mint
original condition and something I am interested in persuing. The
only question I have is, was the original trim on these autos of
chrome plating, or a duller material? The trim on this Austin was
not pitted but not bright and even after a little elbow grease was
    still dullish. Any input?

PS this is in reference to exterior trim.

Probably the plating is just getting worn out ... I've seen this on
not-so-old cars too. The only answer is rechrome or replace ...
