1480.0. "RALLY LESSON WANTED" by JUMBLY::RAPHAELL () Wed Jun 26 1991 13:27

    Hello - can anyone help?!

I want to give my boyfriend a surprise birthday present of a
'supervised/training session' in a Rally Car. The only place that
I have found is in the middle of Wales! - Does anyone know of a
good site a bit nearer Reading?

If this isn't possible another option would be a session on a skid pan
    - again any information would be gratefully received.

I don't usually use 'Notes' so please can you send me any information
you may have by E.Mail - Many thanks:

There's a good skid pan at Thruxton

    Don't know the number, though.

Silverstone has an excellent Rally school which does either half or
    full day courses.

There are also a couple around London. Buy Autosport or Motoring News,
they usually have ads for them

I gave a birthday present to a friend of mine entitling her to day's
driving "experience" at Brands Hatch. This included a tutorial type
session, driving with an expert round Brands Hatch to have your skils
evaluated. There then followed ten laps in either an Escort saloon or
in a Formula 3 Ford single seater. The final session involved timed
laps in a choice of the same vehicles.

Ring Brands Hatch Racing School on 0474 872367 for more details.

Bill Gwynne is the best-known (& best respected) local rally school.

In deepest Wiltshire. Cost for one day in excess of #100 pounds -- but
rated highly by my pals that have done it.

That's the kind of thing i've been looking for.Is there any
chance that you could get hold of the address or phone number of this
    rally school?

    	(I've just discovered this note)

If I remember, I'll bring in a list of names/address/locations of these.

There is a write-up in CAR Mechanics (this month) on a day at a
Rally School in Wales if you want to check that out.

Others I've heard of are :-

    	Silverstone Rally School
Bil Gwynne Rally School (may be replacement for the above)
    	Jan Churchill's -"---"- - (also in Wales)

There are plenty around. Differing prices, differing skill levels,
different values. Depends a bit on how much you wish to spend, how
far you wish to travel, and what you hope to gain from it all.

The latter point, I feel, is the most important. If you just want a
fun day (or half-day) off-road in a rally car, then I would guess that
most of these courses would be suitable. If you actually want to try
it out 'seriously', then a bit more investigation would be required.

    Things to check for :-

What cars are used - front or rear wheel drive ?
How experienced are the 'instructors' ?
What course is used - a 'stage', or a rough bit of land with cones ?
How much time is spent 'lecturing' ?
How much time is spent actually in the car(s) ?
How many people are accepted on each date ?

Also, many of them will provide a video of the day's proceedings.

Get a look in the back of Cosmo magazine, they always carry an
advert for a rally school (as well as the Ian Taylor Racing thingy
that I went on - that's where my wife saw the advert...).
