1419.0. "Orion 1.6i engine management problem (1990 model) " by HOTSPR::KENNEDY (Chaos is a Science.) Wed Apr 24 1991 17:04

I have a 1990 ('old' style) Orion 1.6i Ghia. Intermittently, since new, it has
had a habit of 'idling' at 2000-3000 RPM ! Recently it has been getting worse
and almost caused me to drive into the path of another car at a roundabout - due to
the engine pulling against the brakes.

I took the car to the dealer a week or so ago and they said "Hmm - we think this
is a known problem with the engine management system - we shall have to order
some parts and fit them for you." When I asked them if there had been a recall
for this (safety) problem they humm'ed and harr'ed and really didn't give me a
clear answer. I also asked them what were the parts that they needed to fit to
fix the problem and again I didn't get a sensible reply from them.

I don't want to press them at the moment, because I basically have a good
relationship with them, and additionally I want them to do the work without
pressure, aggro etc.

Has anybody else experienced these problem with the Orion 1.6i and can shed some
light? (the car has done only 3000 miles)

- John.

Why not ring Ford UK Customer Service and see what they say?

If it's the same engine as the XR3i, then I know someone who has had exactly the
same problems. In that case, they ordered a kit ( a "hitachi kit" ??) to fix the
problem.

No questions were asked about recalls etc

	Don't know about Fords, but I'm having exactly the same problem
	with my Range Rover at 30,000 miles old. The revs at tickover
	vary from 0 to 2,000, sometimes sweeping rapidly inbetween.
	Like you, I had the horrifying experience of taking my foot off
	the throttle expecting the car to slow down, and it speeded up
	instead! The garage are looking at it today, needless to say the
	warranty ran out on March the 12th...

RE: -.1

But it is intermitten - this phenomena only occurs when peasants or off-roaders
come into line of sight....

:-)

P.S. Wonder if I can turn this into the 3rd off-road ratholing note?!!
1419.5I've heard that some are faultySUBURB::BUNNTWed Apr 24 1991 20:437

    My wife recently took delivery of an Escort 1600 EFi, and we
    have experienced idling problems ie. the car kept cutting out.

    I took it to Anchor Ford and they have fixed it .... so far it
    seems ok. I have heard that some 1600 fuel injection pumps are faulty!

1419.6It's not a new problem.MAJORS::REVELLDifferent personal nameThu Apr 25 1991 12:479
	I had a B reg Orion 1.6i Ghia , it also used to cut out regularly.
	It never raced though , but my MG Montego Turbo used to accelerate
	when I took my foot off the throttle. This wasn't caused by the
	engine management, but by the butterfly valve on the throttle
	staying open due to a sticky cable.

1419.7Not a sticky throttle cable/mechanism.HOTSPR::KENNEDYChaos is a Science.Thu Apr 25 1991 13:0922
Re: .6

	It's definately not a machanical problem like a sticking throttle
	cable. I once had the bonnet open when it was 'idling' at 3000 RPM
	and the throttle valve was hard up against the closed stop.
	In addition, I got into the car blipped the throttle a couple of
	times but it still fell back to 3000 RPM - I then put it in top
	gear, with the handbrake firmly applied, and fed in some clutch
	and the engine revs stayed at about 3000!!! It seems that the
	(mis)management system was determined not to let the revs fall -
	nomatter what!!! I suspect that the system was cranking open the
	idle actuator/valve to try and maintain the 'idle' revs against
	the load I was applying.

	It's going in on Friday - I'll try and post what they had to do
	to it.

1419.8The Fix?HOTSPR::KENNEDYChaos is a Science.Mon Apr 29 1991 15:2619
Well I took the car in on Friday, the work took 2.5 hours and needed a 'level 8
technician' according to the Ford computerized scheduling system (sounds like a
support engineer job!).

The idle speed actuator has been changed to a completely different design which
now lives on the chassis near the suspension post rather than on the air filter
casing. Lots of new and different hoses to connect it all up. It appears that
the management computer has had a brain transplant (new firmware?) - the
characteristics of the engine at low revs have changed quite a bit. The overrun
cutout is now quite noticable, resulting in a lot more engine braking on the
overrun.

It appears to idle more evenly than before - it used to constantly 'worry'
about the idle speed and get in a loop of adjusting itself - now it just sits
at about 850 RPM quietly humming to itself! But will it last???

Glad I didn't have to pay for it!

    Hi John,

           In the fleet here there are several cars with the same problem
    you were having.I have spoke to the local Ford Dealer who says he is
    unaware of this change in the Idle Speed Actuator & firmware.Would it
    be possible for you to give me the dealers phone number who carried out
    the work & a contact.

                                                    Regards
                                                    Brendan

	The work was carried out by Jacksons, Basingstoke, our local FORD
	dealer - I don't have their number handy I'm afraid. I'm really
	quite impressed with their service so don't queer the wicket for
	me!!!

	BTW - it still appears to be idling OK.
