1406.0. "Van fuel consumption?" by BONNET::HARDY () Tue Apr 02 1991 18:24

    I am thinking of hiring a medium size van (Renault Traffic Diesel -
    similar to a Transit long-wheelbase) and covering a large distance,
    mainly on motorways.

    Has anyone got experience of what sort of fuel consumption I will get,
    given the following;

    	It will be either empty, or not too heavily laden,

    	It is a diesel,

    	I will cruise at about 80mph, or flat out, whichever is slowest

    Thanks or any info

    Peter

    Well, this may not be much help, but when I rented a petrol Trafic
    a number of years ago I was very impressed by it's performance (both
    speed and economy). I recall I got high 20s - low 30s mpg and that
    included a number (large) of miles at 70 mph (of course! :^))

    Mark,

    thanks

    The economics say I need to get 25mpg, so I should be safe.

    If I do get the thing I'll enter the consumption in here (early May)

    A little late but - I don't have figures for a normal Renault Trafic
    van, but I have quite a few of motor caravans based on the trafic -
    I'm not sure whether they are fully laden or not, but the figures
    quoted by the road testers are:-

    1400cc Petrol		circa 28mpg
    1650cc Petrol		circa 25mpg
    1721cc Petrol		circa 24mpg
    2000cc Petrol circa 24.5 mpg unladen | at 56 mpg
    				      23.5 mpg fully laden  |_Manufacturer
    				      31 mpg unladen        |    figures
    				      28 mpg fully laden | at 37 mpg

    2.1 litre diesel circa 25 (big coachbuild)
    				circa 29 (high top)

    2.5 litre diesel circa 24 (big coachbuild)
    				circa 27 (small coach build)

    These vehicles tend not to be driven flat out mind - but should be
    pretty well loaded in "camping trim".

    I would say you should be able to get 25mpg out of the diesel.

    Regards
