1380.0. "Any info on NISSAN SYLVIA?" by PLAYER::MCGOWAN () Wed Mar 06 1991 15:20

   SORRY FOR ALL THE HASSLE BUT THERE ARE PAVN PROBLEMS HERE WHICH
    SEEM TO HAVE INSERTED THE TITLE BUT NO BASE NOTE DURING THE
     CREATION OF THIS NOTE TOPIC. THIS SHOULD BE THE BASE NOTE.

   Hello world,

   I'm currently without a car - due to a long running Belgian
   court case after my Toyota MR2 was discovered to have been in
   a `write-off' accident (very crumpled in the crumple-zone
   and crudely hammered out - chassis is still crooked!); she
   looked great and engine is perfect, but one minor inconvenience
   is that the front wheels might fall off someday...

      YES, I have learned the hard way and it will NOT happen
   again, I'll dismantle any 2nd hand car in future before I buy;
   checking every nut, bolt, panel, etc.

      Anyway, one consolation is that the `protection juridique'
   clause on my insurance covers lawyer fees so I'm fighting back
   against the wallys that sold me this dud. Right now though
   I am considering buying a very cheap NISSAN SYLVIA to keep me
   going temporarily (hopefully). Its an old model on offer
   (1982) and before I go to look at it I'd like a little advice
   on what to check for in this car apart from the regular things.
   For example do the engines fall out after 9 years and 1 day,
   do they rust faster than the first Fiats, etc.

   Thanks in advance for any help.

      Hugh - who is learning French from lawyers and insurance letters.

1380.2I thought a question was being asked...CHEFS::CLEMENTSDPublic Sector and TelecommsWed Mar 06 1991 15:183
    FWIW, I thought that the noter was quite clever to ask the question in
    the header, thus avoiding repeating the question in the note and a lot
    of unecessary tryping......

    Anyway, to answer the question, wasn't the Sylvia a sort of fastback or
    hatchback, and available with a 1.8 turbo'd motor? I seem to recall a
    couple of guys in Newmarket having them 4 or 5 years ago. One of them
    managed to stuff his into the back of a stationary police car attending
    a RTA when he was **WELL** over the limit........

    I have a 'B' reg. '84/85 model. Didn't think they made it before 1984.

    No rust anywhere (7 year anti-corrosion warranty). The only trouble I
    had was the following (171 000 miles) :-

    1. a whining noise above 110mph from driver's door - disappeared after
    having the door re-seated (apparently was quite common).

    2. misfiring when in heavy rain. This was apparently quite common, too,
    due to the coil's position where the water can get at it. A plastic bag
    over the coil nearly eliminated this problem. Since I had a new engine,
    it's been OK.

    3. the turbo seized up after 110 000 miles. Just after the warranty
    expired :^(. I did use it quite a lot.

    I changed the engine after 130 000 miles. It started to use more oil
    and lose power. I think it lasted pretty well considering that the
    first 70 000 miles was done at 110 - 130 mph.

    Apart from that, everything has been perfect.

    Karel.
1380.8Thank you for your help.PLAYER::MCGOWANWed Mar 06 1991 18:496
    Well, thank you all so much! I have a better idea of what to expect
    now. Receiving your replies in such short notice has been great.

    `Au revoir' & `Daag' from bilingual Belgium.
