1375.0. "How to find out about upcoming race meetings" by HABS11::MASON (Explaining is not understanding) Thu Feb 28 1991 06:06

I will be coming over to the UK in the fall. I might try to take in a
race meet or two while there. So...

    1. What is a good publication in which to find a thorough listing of
events (preferably vintage, otherwise current, road course sports
       and formula variety)?

    2. How far in advance should one purchase said reference (i.e. in July
       for September)?

    3. Are these events typically easy to get into, or is advance purchase
       of tickets desireable/possible?

    4. As an old timer ('57-'62 was my prime), I remember names such as
Silverstone, Brands Hatch, Goodwood, etc. Which would be good for
       a variety of viewing venues/interest?

    5. Can one typically wander about the course (behind the appropriate
barriers, of course 8'), or is one usually restricted to grandstands?

Thanks to any and all for info.

    Cheers...Gary

1375.1SHIPS::SAXBY_MYou've got a WHAT in there?!?!Thu Feb 28 1991 12:1027

    Gary,

Silverstone and Brands Hatch are still the two main British circuits
(although Donnington would no doubt dispute this), but Goodwood is no
    longer used for racing.

Autosport lists upcoming events as does Motoring News, but only usually
about 2 weeks ahead as both are weekly publications. Motor Sport may be
a better choice being a monthly.

I've never been to a motor race where you need to buy tickets in advance
so you should be alright (unless you want Grandstand seats for the GP,
in which csae you MIGHT get tickets for 1992 if you're quick!).

What sort of cars do you mean by vintage? There are two types of
historic racing in Britain. The HSCC runs races for '60s and '70s cars
and another club for cars before that (mainly '50s). The HSCC usually
takes over a whole meeting so you'll get all historics. If you like
I'll post details of historic races scheduled for the AUTUMN (:^)) when
the MN calendar appears (probably in the next week or two).

You can walk around most British circuits, from corner to corner.

    Hope this helps,

    Mark

    re: .1

I am primarily interested in mid 1950s through mid 1960s, but wouldn't
turn down anything surrounding that era by a few years. I will look for
    the autumn listings.

    re: .2

I will write - sounds like just the ticket (so to speak).

    Thanks to both.

    Cheers...Gary

    Gary,

I had a Silverstone publicity thing drop through the door on Friday. It
lists a number of events for 1991 with prices. Drop me a mail if you'd
like it put in the internal.
