1289.0. "Does the Golf GTi like "essence sans plomb"?" by SAC::DELANY_S () Tue Nov 13 1990 20:59

Anyone converted a Golf GTi 8V to run on unleaded petrol? Do you
drastically lose performance, and suffer increased fuel consumption?

In Switzerland all new cars have to run un-leaded - including the 8V Gti.
My Gti is pre-green, and I am informed by my garage that running it on lead
free is not a sensible idea - valve lubrication and the like.

The post-green Gti's produce 108 bhp instead of 115 bhp - I don't know how this
translates in terms of performance loss.

Cheers

Steve

1289.3Unleaded GTIs NEWOA::BROWNMWed Nov 14 1990 12:1215
With The Golf GTI, it depends on the model year how well it works after
conversion to unleaded. You can in any case use the 98 octane unleaded without
adjustment. Lead is NOT necessary to lubricate the valve seats in this engine.

For the 95 octane unleaded, GTI's with the Bosch K Jetronic fuel injection had
to have the ignition retarded. VW retarded mine to TDC and it lost not only
outright performance but also a lot of drivability - most of the low speed
torque seemed to have gone with the result that it was not happy below 45mph
in fifth. I swiftly converted it back again and ran it on 98 octane fuel.

Newer GTIs have VW Digifant ignition which I think requires no adjustment for 95
octane, except for earlier 16V cars which cannot run on 95 octane.

1289.4Now there's much more to go wrong!SUBURB::SCREENERRobert Screene, UK Finance EUCWed Nov 14 1990 16:276
I have an article on the VW Digifant Engine Management system (D-reg
onwards) for the 8-valve engine. It states that the performance is
    only slightly effected.

Mail me if you are interested.
