1256.0. "71 MGB Heater Control - Help Please" by CSG002::BAKER () Sat Oct 13 1990 01:42

I have just acquired a 1971 MGB, and love it greatly. It does, however,
have some tiresome failings (as anyone would expect in a car of
this age). A particular pain is in the heater control, and this
is where I need the advice and council of those who are wiser (and
maybe older) than I am. Pray let me explain:

The cable that goes from the heater control on the dashboard to
the water flow control valve on the block is frozen up, and the
previous owner appears to have attempted to cure this by winding
violently on the dashboard heater control. The result is that the
heater control on the dashboard is broken and needs to be replaced.
(for those that use biblical references, this is Moss part number
233-970). So afar so good (except that Moss US does not stock this
part anymore). IN any case, MY PROBLEM IS THAT I CANNOT FIND OUT
HOW TO GET THE HEATER CONTROL KNOB OFF THE SHAFT. There appears to
be some metal rod/screw/Allen screw or something that is holding
it on, and no amount of poking with screwdrivers, Allen wrenches
    ETC has any effect.

The advice of the world would be much appreciated, since there
do not appear to be any yards around Andover that have "experienced"
MGs with this particular part intact, and I therefore have lite
interest in the option of breaking it off .

Sounds like another job for the Haynes manual :-)

I think you just push the pin in, and the knob comes off.

All these parts are available Mail order in the UK. I have addresses
    if you need them ...

Yet another topic about MGBs... how about gathering them all up and making one
big MGB topic instead of little bits scattered everywhere. Or does the latter
more accurately reflect an MGB? ;-)

re -1: Yes I'm in favor for one MGB note as well!

Re: If needed I can supply Dutch addresses as well.
Recently visited oldtimer show, where MG spares supplier even
offered empty dashboard (US spec) with your control fitted.
My car has suffered similar problem, but the only failing part
        was the knob itself.

1256.5Thanks for the comments and help!CSG001::BAKERThu Oct 18 1990 01:2314
Thanks for the help -- I will attempt the "push the pin" exercise
this weekend (I already attempted this maneuver, but perhaps without
sufficient "push"). I assume the "pin" is backed by a spring set
    into the heater control shaft.

Thanks also for the Canadian supply source - I will get in contact
    with them.

Finally, I too believe that one MG or MGB entry would be useful.
There are, however, so many things that can (and do) go wrong with
these vehicles that it would be good to have "Fix it notes", "General
notes" and (given some of the players in this notes file and their
reactions to the "B") "Beat up on the MG" notes.

    Dear Mr Moderator.

As you might have seen some votes from the world, would you be so kind
to scrape all MGB related issues to one final MGB note?

    Thanks in advance.
