1205.0. "Rover 214 - a load of bull?" by KERNEL::ROE (3.16 - know what I mean, John?) Thu Aug 30 1990 16:09

My current lease car is a Rover 214GSi

		<pause for sniggers and guffaws>

and there is a peculiar noise emanating from it which I can only liken to a
quiet MOO!
<who said that the car is a cow?>

The local dealer says that they have had various complaints about this, and it's
caused by the automatic venting of the fuel tank. Has anyone else had any
experience of this and had it cured?

A friend of mine has one which does the same thing. We thought it was the fuel
tank too. Don't know of a fix though. .-1 would work I expect, but it would be
better to fix the cause rather than the symptom, if possible.

1205.3could it be a mad cow??YUPPY::ELLAWAYFri Aug 31 1990 01:199
A friend of mine has the same thing on a 214 model Rover.
Even when its been turned off for a couple of hours you can
hear this gentle cow like noise emitting from the car, although
have'nt managed to pinpoint where it's coming from.
Can't be exactly sure but I thought he said he had already
thought of the ventilation hole and actually bought one but
the elusive old cow still seems present.

I think I have a cure for this mooooing. First you get up real
early in the morning (preferably before sunrise) you get a stool
and a metal bucket :-) and you milk it......

I am terribly sorry for this reply but I just couldn't help myself
I hope it nothing to serious....seriously

1205.8No MOO and light on Fuel !HERON::GASCOIGNERoger GascoigneThu Oct 04 1990 17:5611

Interesting - I hired a 214 for a UK holiday last week and it did not
have this vice - in fact it had very few vices at all and it used 113.4
litres of unleaded in 1,075 miles - a very light thirst.

It did have an aggravating whine which was related to where the wipers
parked ! I liked it and understood why the report from NEC said that
there is a waiting list for the beast !

Roger, I'm amazed you got 43 MPG!

The best I've managed has been 36, averaging 31-32 MPG, and believe me I've
tried hard to improve on this.

Another reason for fond reminiscing over the old GTI......sigh.

As mentioned before a friend has a 214 that moo's and has taken it to
the garage on routine services and asked them to check it out.

On the first visit they said that was the first car they had heard
imitating a cow (hard to believe when you consider how many there are)
and said that they had fixed it!!!! They had'nt (surprise)

On the second visit they came out with the same old crap about never
hearing this before???? But we have fixed it sir (bullshit!!)

And so it goes on, that elusive cow is still at large

Not sure whether it is what you are on about, but I passed a 214 last night,
and heard what sounded more like an electric pump for a short burst, but the
car had, I am sure, been there before we went into the pub, so it would have
been there for around an hour. Does this mean that it can happe at any time ???

Describes the symptoms perfectly. There seems to be no rhyme nor reason to
the timing - I've been aware of it right through the night on occasion!

Maybe I should approach Anchor butter and get the car into their next ads!

Well I had a hire 416 for a couple of days last week and guess what?.

Occasionally when I got in, or turned on the ignition I heared it
'MOO'. Sounds to me like the tank or the pump venting. However, I still
haven't heared it in my own 416.

So it's got to be fixable, if you can identify the cause.

I've got a couple of Honda Civics both 1396cc ... and ... they both
make these wonderful cow noise. I spoke to Honda who said it was
    venting but ...

One of the cars has been sitting in the Garage for the last 8 weeks
(except for occasional start + short drive to stop thing seizing) and
even though I remove and replaced the filler cap the car was still
mooing (loudly) after 7-days locked up in the garage (away from the
    fields).

    	Rik.

Talking of "venting out", the average cow produces 500,000 cm3 of methane per
day - could there be a connection between this and the mooing sound?!

So.... all I have to do is work out how to use the methane as fuel and increase
my MPG figure that way!

I'm going to raise this whole issue with the garage at next service time. The
neighbours are getting annoyed by the nocturnal emissions (but that's another
story!)

1205.23Moooore details...KERNEL::ROE3.16 - know what I mean, John?Thu Dec 13 1990 12:5520

Well, today the car is in to rectify the problem (hopefully).

There's a hot-off-the-presses new 3-way fuel tank vent which should solve the
moo-nlight seranades. As this is the first one that the local garage has to
fit, they can't yet guarantee the fix - I'll be sure to let them know if it
doesn't!

When I asked about fuel consumption, I was told that 34MPG is the figure that
they hear customers talking about a lot. Not impressive, but not far off what
I've been achieving, so I'll have to accept it.

I read in a magazine yesterday that 16v engines need to be worked hard, and
that unless the Rover is driven above 5000rpm the driver "would wonder what all
the fuss was about". I dread to think what my fuel consumption would be if I
were to use those revs! (Hmmmm, think I'll experiment a bit...)

Don't really agree, yes, to get the EXTRA performance you need to be up
that top end, but having driven a montego 1.6 for a few days, going
back to my Rover 1.6 is a revelation. Even when pootling along in the
    2-4K revs (diesel :-}) range.

Re .-1

After the mod fitted (see .23) by the garage, I've not had the problem at all.

It IS fixable! Ask the garage about the new 3-way valve that Rover have made
available. I can get moo-re details from Hadley Rover garage in Basingstoke if
you still have problems....

Surely a bark would be better advertising than a moo, for a Rover?

    Moo-ing

Well having said I've never heared this 'moo-ing' on my 416, I must now
change that to I've ONCE heared it. I was moving wheels around, and had
the car jacked up rear O/S and it did it a couple of times as the car
    was rocked.

    Never had the slightest trouble

Can I suggest we take this to note 793 which is more generally about
the Rover 200/400, and leave this topic for the silly old moo's.

Mine does it too! I can't hear it from inside
the car, only when I'm washing it. Loosening
and tightening the petrol cap seems to give
me a pretty good workaround.
