1203.0. "Spluttering AX GT's" by MAJORS::REVELL (Shoots, but can't hit..) Thu Aug 30 1990 13:53

    Calling all Citroen AX GT owners.

    Have any of you experienced problems when accelerating hard in 2nd or
    3rd gear ? The problem I have occurs when I try to take the engine
    over 5,500 rpm, the engine then splutters and then no matter what I
    do the car slowly but surely comes to a halt. Changing down a gear
    or trying to use the throttle makes no difference, the only "cure"
    is to stop and then turn the engine off then on again.

    When I first got the car I was not used to this and after overtaking
    other cars, I would often have to pull over to let them overtake
    me.

    The red line limit is 7000 rpm, so I was extremely surprised when
    this happened. The car has been into the dealers a number of times,
    they say they fixed it the first time, something to do with the
    engine management module, the next time I took it in they said
    they couldn't reproduce the problem. I have even spoken to Citroen
    UK , they have not heard of this happening before.

1203.1Fuel?CRATE::SAXBYIs this personal or what?Thu Aug 30 1990 14:388

    Could it be a fuel problem? I had a misfire in my Renault which
    was initially diagnosed as electrical, but finally turned out to
    be a clogged carb. The problem with mine occured after going
    through corners quickly, but made hard acceleration is bringing
    yours on. Just a thought anyway.

1203.2Ballast resistor on alternator?SYSTEM::TOWERSThu Aug 30 1990 14:558
    I had a similar problem on my old Astra GTE. The problem turned out
    to be a blown ballast resistor on the alternator. Result was that too
    much voltage was being supplied to engine management chip and it was
    cutting out. The effect of this was that the car was no longer fuel
    injected/engine managed and the correlation between right foot pressure
    and performance became random.

1203.3(but can your ears stand 7000 in an AX for long :-)SIEVAX::CORNEStore in a horizontal positionThu Aug 30 1990 19:348
Well, it doesn't happen on all AX GTs - I often drive the one that belongs
to my other half and it never has any trouble reaching the red line (and staying
there when I need it!).

If it all returns to normal after a rest, could it be a slightly blocked
vent in the filler cap?

I tried holding high revs (6000+) for as long as my ears would stand it,
no problems as described. I suggest you find a better garage (I dunnow where
though!).

1203.5I shall get onto CITROEN UK MAJORS::REVELLShoots, but can't hit..Tue Sep 04 1990 17:5514

Hi,

Thanks for all your input, I think I shall get in touch with the technical
department for Citroen UK.

As an aside, when I spoke to one of the Dunderheads at the garage about the
revving problem, he said that after 5000 rpm you'd get a lot of valve bounce.
If so , I said, then why's the red line at 7000 rpm ??

Gary.
