1196.0. "Percy sludge ?" by SHAPES::LOUGHLINI (Colonel Stack) Tue Aug 21 1990 13:38

Whilst servicing my wife's 1985 Escort (1296cc CVH Engine) last
weekend, I noticed that the rocker cover was full of thick black
sludge some of which had hardened and blocked the ventilation
path into the crankcase (pollution emission system).

Is this buildup of sludge normal for a car that has done only
    41000 miles?

What's the most likely cause? eg short journeys/cheap oil/fault ?

Is the rest of the engine likely to be contaminated and/or blocked?

Naturally I cleaned out the rocker cover but should I investigate
    further or just leave it?

I remember reading many years ago that you could replace your oil
with some other cleaning substance, run around for 100 miles, then
fit new oil. This was supposedly for very high mileage engines in
the days before oil contained detergents. They don't have anything
like this in Halfords nowadays. Anyone heard of it ?

    re - few

Yes it will be flushing oil, its called 'Engine Flush' and its made by
Wynns should be available at your local Halfords!!

You mix it with your exsisting oil, idle the engine for 10 mins, drain
    and refil...

I encountered this sludge problem on a 1985 Ford Orion 3 years ago, and
currently on a 1978 Triump Dolomite which I am restoring. Comma make an
    excellent flushing oil:

First you drain your existing oil, and refill with 2 litres of Comma
Flushing Oil. Then run the negine for 10 minutes at high idle speed,
and drain again. Then change oil filter and refill with new oil as per
usual. Also ensure that the crankcase ventilation system is free of
    this gooey stuff.

    Hope this helps
