1139.0. "funny noise" by SHIRE::GOLDBLATT () Mon Jul 09 1990 11:23

    My Golf has developed a peculiar noise when the motor is running cold.
    It sounds like someone inside the engine is beating on an empty tin
    can. The noise is not too loud, and completely disappears when
    the motor warms up. Nothing's loose, at least I can't find anything
    obvious rattling around, and I don't think it's this because the motor
    runs very smoothly when cold.

    Any suggestions as to who's trapped in the engine ?

1139.1Put some oil in it!!!IOSG::MARSHALLHarry PalmerMon Jul 09 1990 13:5511
Low oil level => low oil pressure during first few minutes of running =>
Poorly lubricated camshaft/tappets/rocker mechanism => tapping noise.

Problem compounded because (unless your car's very old) you've got hydraulic
tappets. There is usually a "whine" for the first few seconds of running, until
the oil pressure in these has built up. Maybe this is louder now as well?

Don't rely on the oil warning lamp on the dash; that won't come on until the
oil's low enough to have already damaged the engine. Check the dipstick weekly.

If the oil level is ok, you may have some blocked/partially blocked oil
passages. Try adding some gunk removing additive to your oil before the next
change.

    	I've got a funny noise!

    		It can be heard at high speed,it sounds like the
     alternators whinning,but I could be wrong.Does anyone else have this
    problem?Is there a cure?
    		Also do you get more road noise from low profile tyres,than
    from ordinary tyres?(Are pirelli P600 classed as Low profile?)

    		As you say I haven't got a turbo(but I was thinking of
    getting a courtney turbo,but at 2500 pounds it's a bit expensive).A
    small question.Does the alternaters revolutions increase with Rpm's?

    	Any ideas??

    Well take a look under the bonnet, see that the alternator pulley is
    attached by a rubber belt thingy to an engine pulley and then tell us
    what YOU think. :-) :-)

    Stevie.

    (Oh alright then, the answer is yes.)
