1133.0. "smelly back-end" by FIELD::LOUGHLINI (Life's a beach) Wed Jul 04 1990 18:59

For some time, I have been able to smell exhaust fumes in my R25.
It's not only in heavy traffic where I could be ingesting others'
fumes and I've had the exhaust checked out at Humphreys. Their
suggestion is that I fit one of those flashy chrome extensions
to my pipe ( I mean the R25's pipe of course ) since the fumes
could be rising vertically, when stationary, and entering the
    car via the boot seal.

Does this sound plausible and has anyone had this problem/fix?

    Being a middle-aged, outside_lane_squating, IAM, ROSPA, b_o_f,
I don't want to fit flashy gizmos without good reason.

We had a not dis-similar problem with Jane's 1st 924, and it was very
definitely the boot/hatch seal not sealing correctly. The fix we used
was to sell the car I'm afraid.

My dad has a problem with a smelly volvo 7** turbo intercooler
bus-thing. He does not get exhaust fumes but gets the smell of petrol
when he winds down the windows. It is quite strong and there is also
the same smell in the boot. All the fuel-pipes and breather pipes have
been checked by the garage he bought the car from, but the problem
    still remains.

Any ideas or has anybody had a similar problem?
    Thanks,
    Barry.
