1109.0. "Fitting "Tweeters"" by SHAPES::STREATFIELDC (VW Beetle.. IOSG::AIR_COOLED) Tue Jun 12 1990 17:44

    I have a pair of 4 Ohm tweeter speakers which I want to hook up to my
    existing car stereo,

    The set-up so far is;

    Audioline auto-reverse tape deck
    Goodmans 60 watt amp/equaliser
    50 watt Pioneer speakers in back. (*2)

    The amp has a front/rear fader, and has the front speaker wires
    currently not connected to anything.
    The question is, how do I connect up the Tweeters, I am a bit cautious
    about connecting the tiny little things direct to the front channels,
    with upto 60 watts going to them!.

    They were bought as standard equipment to fit in the door panels of
    a Rover 820, but never bothered to be fitted!

    You need a cross-over unit to seperate out the high requency for the
    tweeters. If you don't then all the bass & mid-range will be put
    through them as well and that won't do them much good. Check out an
    ICE specialist and see if there are any filters available that will do
    the trick. Also check the maximum power rating for the tweeters and
    compare this with what you are going to be putting through them.

Maplin do a range of crossovers, both 2 and 3 way. Buy them mail order (you can
get their catalogue from W.H.Smith) or in one of about 8 shops around the
country.

    I believe I have seen a Maplin shop on the Oxford Road in Reading, just
    up from the Ramada Hotel on the left going out of town.

    At the moment I have 1 of the 2 Tweeters set up at the top of the
    inside winscreen pillar, facing towards the driver, I am also tring this
    out with sticky pads until I get the best sound, at the moment, just
    with 1 sounds quite impressive, linked in Paralell with the rear
    channel, but not yet gone over about 35 watts (chicken!)
