1056.0. "Oil stains on tarmac" by IOSG::MITCHELL (Elaine) Tue May 01 1990 13:50

Can anyone recommend anything to remove engine oil from tarmac. Cement
is fine for mopping-up when it has just been spilt, but what about old
spills, can anything be done about them?

(Our neighbour has complained about the state of the tarmac outside our
garage, which he has to walk accross to get from his garage to his
house - a strange arrangement, I know, but anyone who has been to our
house will know about the stupid layout of the houses and garages!)

Would I be right in thinking that Derek has been a mucky pup??

As far as chemicals go, most of the ones I have come across are
for cleaning oil off concrete ,not too sure about Tarmac. A friend of
mine will know if there are chemicals for that job, I'll ask. Again,
never on tarmac but most other hard concrete type surfaces I find
a high presure water jet cleaner does the job, I think there are
chemicals that can be use with the jet wash that aid the process.

    re -1, thanks,

Yes, derek has spilt rather a lot of oil recently, but the Landy does
also 'drip', which in itself wouldn't cause too much of an eyesore, but
when added to everything else, doesn't help our case with the
neighbour! There's no agro yet, but it's one of those situations where
we are going to have to be careful!

Any clues as to where? - I did a dir/title on oil, and there was
    nothing relevant.

I agree, I'm getting a definate feeling of Deja Vu here. Could it be
    another conference ( e.g. BASINGSTOKE?)

Um. A little lateral thinking perhaps ? Re-dress offending
areas with those little bags of patching gunge you can get ?

1056.7Elbow grease (but don't spill it on the tarmac!)IOSG::MARSHALLWed May 02 1990 13:144
A little water, a lot of washing up liquid, and a lot of hard work with a stiff
brush...

Gunk or Jizer, let soak, stiff broom, lots of water.

I haven't tried it, but Swarfega does a fair job on hands, so might
    be kind to Tarmac.

why not cover the rest of it in oil so it is evenly coated in the

I can't remember where this was before. My suggestion is a
very stiff solution of detergent, a very stiff brush and
	lots of elbow grease.

This would be cheaper than proprietary products.

PS. Petrol's good too but very unhealthy/dangerous so I shouldn't
	use it.

Undesirable results if one were to use petrol to clean off oil from
tarmac, since the petrol "eats the tar and leaves only the mac." You
aquire a hole in the tarmacam quite rapidly!.

This was graphically shown to me when I was taking part in the
English Electric inter-works Driving tests (which I won!!!) in 1969,
when a very enthusiastically driven 100E Anglia overturned. It spilt
its' petrol (a pint or two only before it was righted) onto the nice
new tarmac surface, leaving a hole about 12" diameter and 2" deep quite
    quickly!
