1027.0. "Anyone for an automatic? Small automatic..." by SYSTEM::GOODWIN (Pete Goodwin. EDI. DPII) Tue Apr 17 1990 19:02

There a few cars I can think of that I can describe as 'small' and
automatic. For instance, Mini-Automatic, the Ford Fiesta CVT (sp?), the
Fiat Uno Selecta (I understand this uses the same CVT as Ford?) and the
    Nissan Micra Automatic.

These are all cars around the 1000-1300cc engine size. What are they
like? Underpowered? OK? Passable? Dreadful? I test drove an automatic
Micra - seemed OK, though I never got a chance to try anything that
    needed a bit of 'poke'.

    Pete.

I had the fiasco (sorry fiesta) CVT and drove from Gatwick to Newbury.
It got there; but it's not a car to hurry. The right pedal is volume
NOT acceleration!, The car does it's own thing about speeding up.

Not recommended except if your a dodery old pensioner.

My my used to have a DAF 66 Marathon that had the CVT automatic
and that was not slow for a car of it's time (1974).

It did have an advantage though it had the Renault 1800cc engine.
My mum used to have races with BMW 316's and win :-)

My mum has an automatic Metro with a 1.3 engine. It is not quite
as nippy as her previous 1.3 manual Metro, but it is quite a pleasant
car to drive. I now refer to it as the Go Kart, because it is rather
like driving one. All in all, not a bad little car.

I have the 998cc Automatic Mini...

It is a very nice 1971 model, but it is somewhat underpowered compared
to a normal 998 mini - about 10% power loss, which is absorbed in
    the transmission.

It is for sale (in Switzerland) if anybody is interested.

The Nissan Micra I test drove was 1000cc... I don't think I'd go for
    anything less than 1300cc.
