1019.0. "Recommended for Budding Rallyists" by YUPPY::PATEMAN (Get the British GP back to Aintree!) Tue Apr 10 1990 16:55

Anyone out there with 170 or so notes would be well advised spending
them with the John Watson Rally School at Silverstone if they arethat
way inclined. I got the chance to try a day there yesterday as a
    birthday present.

On the full day you get two sessions:

AM - multiple laps (12ish) of a 1km mixed tarmac (sort of!) and
gravel/boulder strewn stage with a good mix of bends and a hairpin
    for practising the handbrake turns.

    Lunch

PM - Drives on a 2 mile simulated forest stage with drops and brows.
I got two goes for myself, plus a full speed demo by my instructor,
Iain Freestone, who would have been around 25th or so on last years
RAC (and 2nd in his class) but for missing a control gate. That
was something else. I was getting upto 70+ on the downhill section,
but he was touching 85, and taking *every* corner in third by using
    left foot braking.

All of this in a GpN prepared 309GTi.

Its a very good day and I'd recommend it to anybody. They also do
the morning only for about #80, and a full day in a group of 4 for
around #275 cobering left foot braking etc.

Now if there is anyone out there who's got a rally car going spare
    and fancies being a co-driver.....................

Just out of curiosity, what if someone from the States wanted to attend
while on vacation or business? Do you need your own Nomex suit and
helmet or can they supply them?

Overalls & helmets are provided, but you would need to book in advance,
if you want I can dig up the phone numbers etc.

    As requested:

The John Watson Rally School offers 3 main courses:

    Half day intro	#80
Full day intro	#175 - this is what I did
    Full day improvement	#295
     - this one is done in a group of 4 with one instructor and spends
all day on the long stage, including techniques such as left
       foot braking.

The instructors I had were Iain Freestone, Ian Beveridge and Liz
Linden, all the instructors have to have least scored class wins
in a national championship. Others they list are Jenny Birrell and
    Chris Lord (Autosport columnist)

If you are already good at the game they can also arrange three
day trips to Finland and Private tuition. The week before I attended
they had a 15 year old there who's father paid #1500 for a day of
solo tuition with Malcolm Wilson. The instructors reported that
the lad was exceptionally good! Sickening isn't it!!!

Anyway, bookings and details from the school at Silverstone Circuit,
Silverstone, N'hants. I forgot the phone number but the circuit
will be able to give it to you. They are on 0327 857273.

Have fun, I'm going to try and do the improvement day in the not
    too distant future.
