1002.0. "Low MGB oil Pressure " by RDGE44::JONESK (I want Linus' blanket) Mon Apr 02 1990 15:42

I've got a 1976 MGB Roadster with oil pressure probs.

    Driving on the motorway the pressure initially rises to 70 and after
    a while fades down to 60 where it stays throughout the trip.

    At the end of the motorway, however, when it's sitting idling over,
    the pressure flickers around 20-30 and it feels as though its about to
    stall.

    There is plenty of oil in the engine.

    The last time the oil & filter were changed was roughly 9,000 miles
    ago so I guess it's about ready for another. The oil is pretty
    dirty too (well black actually!).

    Should this solve my problem?

    Thanks,

    Kris.

1002.2Oil Cooler? IOSG::FREERDeadly brain, or Brain dead?Mon Apr 02 1990 16:138
Hows the Oil cooler?

It could be that it is less effecient then when it was new, and the oil could
be overheating slightly?

Only a guess!

	Hey, 9000 miles on a B-series engine is going a bit far between oil
	changes. Have a heart; you are supposed to change the oil and filter
	every 6000 miles.

	20-30 psi pressure on tick-over with a hot engine is OK. If it drops
	anywhere near 10, consider a new oil pump (which you have to take
	the engine out to change).

1002.4is this the engines choice?REPAIR::TAYLORof course, I could be wrongMon Apr 02 1990 17:294

    Try using flushing oil with the old filter, then drain and fit new
    filter & oil. Its a bit of a messy job, but quite a good idea on
    B & A series engines.

If I waited 9000 miles between oil changes, I'd be happy if the oil pressure was
that high! Right about now, it probably has the viscosity of water.

I wouldn't say it was a trick question at all!

Many moons ago, I drove a Vanden Plas Pricess R that did about 40 mpg - of oil.
Mind you, it had 206,000 on the clock and had never ven had the rocker cover off
until I broke the seal of gunge and provided an exit route ....

I discovered this recently; the Ford X-Flow (Kent) engine has far lower oil
pressure than (eg) a BMC A-series engine, and this is apparently perfectly
normal. Not sure what engine's in an MGB though...

On my old escort, the pressure relief valve opened at 40-ish psi...

>>Not sure what engine's in an MGB though...

Try a B series? 8-)

10 psi in any BMC engine is very low. I ran an A series, admittedly rather
tuned up, at 15 psi and the bearings gave out rather rapidly. False economy!

FWIW, the E-type runs about 30 psi on hot tick-over (950 rpm) and 80+ psi at
anything above 2000 rpm (=40 mph in top).
1002.19Caked CoolerRDGE44::JONESKLet me try....Muuuuuum !Wed May 16 1990 13:4617
    Here is another oily problem.........

    I have an oil cooler placed behind the air hole on my front spoiler.
    I hadn't really noticed it until I came to change the oil but the
    whole cooler is now 'caked' in dirt/oil/grime/dead_bugs/nasty_stuff.
    Consequently, no air is getting through to cool the oil.

    OK. I guess I can BLAST out the dirt etc. using a high powered
    spray but what I want to know is.....

    Will the caking cause the engine temp to be hotter than normal?
     I say this because I have noticed recently the temp. rising slowly
    especially on my return journey home. I know the weather has been
    warmer but not cooling the oil must have some side effects ??????

Sounds worth a try. How can I get the money to Reading, and the oil cooler
to Annecy ??? I am in Manchester every weekend (apart from this next one)
if that is any help.
