996.0. "CARLTON GSI" by UKCSSE::PARKER () Wed Mar 28 1990 18:32

	I'm feeling a more than a little *^!#** off.

	Here is the saga.

	In June 1989 I ordered a Carlton GSi, the model changed , so I had to
wait while the new model went into production. never mind, more Power (whoopee)
204 BHP, further upgraded suspension etc.
	Finally got it Feb 21st 1990.

	March 21st, only 1200 miles on clock, lots of clunking from back end
at Junction 11 as the gearbox lost 2nd. !st, 3rd, 4th all OK, no more clunking
but 2nd behaving like an extension of Neutral .

	Got it into Great Western the next day, they phoned me up to say new
gearbox needed. As of today no sign of gearbox or delivery date, none in
country has to come from Germany.

	I tow and caravan so bye-bye to two weekends away so far, one of which
was to chase a little white ball into long grass after hitting it with a stick.

	Meanwhile I'm really enjoying driving a 1600 Sierra L, supplied by PHH!!
and thinking of all the money I'm paying to keep my Carlton from wearing out
its tyres

996.1Get that car sorted out!!KERNEL::TYLERCThu Mar 29 1990 14:3010
    	You are well within your right to ring up and complain to PHH
    to get a car in the same group as yours, (EG, similar or better
    than your Carlton). Its YOUR money and they can't refuse to not
    give you an equivelant car. If complaining to PHH doesn't work,
    try contacting car fleet (I did say TRY) and ask them.
    	A friend had his 16V Astra stolen and he got a Grotty car
    "something 1600L" and he complained and they gave him a Sierra 4X4
    until they can sort out his old car and the money he is paying them.
    	good luck

    Interesting...

    I have complained to PHH about the hire cars that I have recieved in
    replecement for my RS Turbo (Sierra 1600 estate, Sierra 1600l, etc
    etc). PHH informed me that their contract with Digital is only for
    "engine size" by which they mean that my RS Turbo is a 1600, so is
    their Sierra estate.

    It seemed unfair to me as I apy more for my RS than I would for a
    standard Sierra, but I have been assured that this is the rule.

    Regards

996.3LATEST UPDATEUKCSSE::PARKERThu Mar 29 1990 20:0211
	Well the bad news, no signs of a replacement gearbox. Both PHH and
Great Western Motors have got the same tale out of Luton, its got to come from
Germany and delivery date is unknown as is method of delivery - road or flight.
	I've a feeling in my water that I won't see my car before Easter, as I
had it such a short time I'm even beginning to forget what it looks like!!!

	The better news is that I explained all this to Car Fleet (Julian), who
was most helpful and got onto PHH. They in turn got onto Vauxhalls with the
result that Vauxhall will pay for a hire car of equivalency, Group G I think.

	I'll keep you informed ,

    You should have got another Toyota, I bet you miss the Supra.
    I seem to remember another note where you said Mrs.P insisted on
    something with 4 doors............As I said then it would have
    been cheaper to change the wife than change the car!!

If you can influence the hire car companies, try for a Peugeot 405 GL.

I had one of these, and was very impressed, much nicer than a Sierra.

996.6GEARBOX HERE UKCSSE::PARKERTue Apr 03 1990 15:5912
	Well the gearbox arrived in Luton Thurs and was with Great Western
Motors on Monday. It's being fitted today and I may even get the car back this
evening. So look out for a silver GSi at the rear of DPII.

	Good contacts for chasing things up can be found at Vauxhalls:-

996.7Sound familiar?IOSG::BROGANMike BroganThu Apr 05 1990 14:0019
I took delivery of a Carlton GSI 24V about 5 weeks ago. Great car much
improved on the older model. Vauxhall (or should I say Opel) on the face of
it seem to have improved quality - better fitting trim etc. However....

Last week, about 1200 miles on the clock - second gear disappears. All
other gears are fine. In to Grot Western Motors who, a day later get back
to me to say - "needs a new gearbox cos we're not allowed to strip them
down and oh dear!, Vauxhall quote - part not available. We'll have to get
one from Germany".

Latest ETA of gearbox is this coming weekend. I'm not holding my breath.
Meanwhile, I have to suffer an asthmatic Rover 216.

Ken I guess you and I should make sure the next gearboxes are ordered now
in time for the next 1200 miles, because it sounds to me like there's a
design fault here. Or is it just built in obsolescence gone crazy.
