921.0. "TOWING WITH SUZUKI SJ" by AYOU08::WEARING () Fri Jan 12 1990 16:18

    Anyone out there have experience in towing with a SUZUKI JEEP, in
    particular I would be interested in any accounts concerning the SJ413
    listing what was towed, what weight, whether braked or un-braked and
    what the outfit was like to drive.

    I should add that I have heard all the comments the Suzies drive and
    alleged roll abilites but find mine a great little run about which
    copes superbly with the off-road uses I put it too. More fun per pound
    than Alton Towers.

921.1Not as heavy as an Escort!FERNEY::KEHILYFri Jan 12 1990 16:257

    We towed an Escort 3 with one a year or so ago, after some kind soul
    had tried to steal the Escort and broke the ignition switch. It seemed
    to manage without many problems, obviously it struggled a bit. The only
    thing it couldn't cope with was the Escort steering lock going on a
    corner ... almost pulled both cars off the road! That was a 410, I
    wasn't driving.

    May not help, but.....

    One day after a snowfall I was out playing in my SJ410 when I cam
    across a Cortina stranded at the bottom of a hill. I'd been up and down
    this particular hill a couple of times, so I decided to do the good
    deed and give him a tow to the top.

    It didn't work. I couldn't get traction in 4wd, or even low ratio.
    Bottom line seemed to be he was too heavy for my little buggy.

    p.s. My secretary has a SJ413 that she and her husband use to tow a
    trailer with a Jet-ski on. I haven't heard any complaints, but I'll ask
    her for more details if poss.

1) moderate sized nit: it isn't a Jeep. Jeep is a registered trade mark of AMC
and should only be applied to that company's product.

2) the SJ410 is only rated at 750 kg tow, so I doubt you should be towing a car
with it!

3) I was once towed out of a snow bank by one (I was driving a real Jeep at the
time, but that's another story - largely the consequence of the absence of
locking diffs on a CJ7) so a short haul tow is probably OK.

If you haven't bought it already I'd suggest the Daihatsu Sportrak as a better
tow car in this category.
