897.0. "Diesel prices: why so variable ?" by SAC::JEPSON (Eschew Obfuscation) Tue Dec 19 1989 14:38

To diesel car owners out there ...

I'm considering getting a diesel car from the scheme (if
fleet can ever provide the quote).

In October when I first entered the quote diesel fuel was
retailing at anything between 166 and 171 pence per gallon.

I notice now I'm seeing prices of 181 pence !!

         1. Prices are much more variable between filling stations than
petrol - why is this ?
Are there grades of diesel ?

         2. Why don't prices increases like those I've noticed above
get the same level of publicity as petrol ?

It seems to me filling stations can charge whatever they feel
like for diesel without harming their competitive edge (or
         whatever).

         Any views people ?

         Andy

AUDI have got a direct injection diesel that is supposed to be very
clean and economical. VW have also produced a direct injecton petrol
engine that doesn't require a Cat to meet the new emission standards
    (91/92).

The Best place (cheapest) I have found is Sanisburys own station,
adjacent to their superstore, they are usually 7 - 10 pence cheaper
    than anywhere else.

Do you mean unleaded diesel has less lead than unleaded petrol ?

Re Turbo-Diesel. What do you mean by 'petrol equivalent car' ? Do you
mean a petrol engined car with performance in the same ball park ? If
so, then of course the Turbo-Diesel performs the same !!
