886.25some facts...VOGON::ATWALDreams, they complicate my lifeThu Jan 04 1990 12:0218
car is priced at 299,999 pounds plus annual rate of inflation until delivered
plus car tax plus VAT.

Tom Walkinshaw (Jaguar Sport) took over 1000 orders together with cash/draft
deposits of 57 grand each = almost 60 millions in one morning.

Folk that had orders accepted were given a contract stating that the production
line would be srapped after the 333rd model was completed (three cars will be
used for type approval).

Punters will be notified by the end of February if they will be allowed to buy
the car. Rumours are that only RHD cars will be made.

The value of the deposit has already doubled (assuming car will be delivered),
so there's plenty of people with the readies available...

Glad to hear about the RHD only. There was a time when ALL quality cars
were RHD ...

the reason for RHD only was (hopefully) to prevent speculators from buying
the car with the sole intention to export it at a huge profit.

The engine does not comply with US emissions laws (a further prevention),
but money will surely overcome this hurdle. Wonder how many would actually be
put on the open road anyway...

When do they plan to deliver this car? From 1992 EC emissions laws will
almost certainly be as strict as the US laws.

    Right,

    At last my chance has come to take Derek on in the Group K
    series.

    I reckon this should be just the 'kit' I need to take those Ultimas

    It's not being produced by Jag is it. I'd read that this was an old
    TWR project that was temporarily shelved when the XJ220 was announced,
    but has been bought forward again. And that Jaguar didn't admit they
    knew anything about it.

    It could well make the XJ220 look a bit silly.

    Not forgetting 'The Race' with huge prize money if you buy one. (I
    reckon that is so TWR can make more money producing spares, body shells,
    etc...)

I read that the prize offered is a refund of the purchase price. Dunno if
this meant overall winner of the series or on a per race meeting basis :-)

886.34Jaguarsport or TWR???COMICS::COOMBERWe come in peace, shoot to killThu Oct 11 1990 18:584
    Is this beast being made by TWR or Jaguarsport. I know its one and the same
    but its the difference between it being a Jaguar or a TWR car.

886.41Info from Fast Lane magazineCRATE::RUTTERRutter the NutterWed Dec 05 1990 18:0611
    According to an article in Fast Lane (December issue),
    the Walkinshaw Jaguar will only be sold as a race car now.

    Reason stated was 'pressure from Jaguar factory', who
    seem none to pleased at the way this car would out-perform
    the XJ220...

    Also, Porsche will not now produce a road-going version
    of their 962 - due to general public opinion on environmental issues.

886.43The worlds most expensive and complete kit car?DOOZER::JENKINSQuote......unquotEWed Dec 05 1990 21:3812

    The reason for the R9 (now XJR-15 or somesuch I think) not being
    sold as "road-going" was the need for type approval tests. To
    complete the type approval tests you have to "write-off" a number
    of cars. With very limited production this didn't make much sense
    to TW, so he's selling the cars for "racing" only.

    However, as the car conforms to all the "construction and use"
    regulations, it would be quite possible to register it as a kit
    car.

886.44The Old Nurburgring circuit record falls.NEWOA::SAXBYIs Bart Simpson the anti-Christ?Mon Dec 09 1991 19:177

    The XJ220 recently broke the old Nurburgring production car record in the
    hands of John Nielsen (Or was it Andy Wallace?). The record was broken
    by quite a hefty margin and Jaguar CLAIM that the car was running on OE
    tyres rather than some racing specials. Sounds like fun, eh?

    A chat with a good friend over the weekend (his wife works at TWR)
    revealed that TWR/Jaguarsport are developing a successor to the 220.
    Tom W. is currently in the process of hiring a team to manage the project.

    Initial plans are for a power unit to be supplied by a little company
    who work out of Milton Keynes.........

    Some of the cars might find their way into the BPR GT championship.
    TWR have prepared a number of chassis: slightly detuned engine, light
    chassis, etc ... competitive price if I remember well. Now, the car has
    to prove against the usual McLaren GTR, F40 and Porsches.
