865.0. "Le Mans 1990" by VANISH::BARRON (Snoopy Vs Red_Barron) Tue Nov 21 1989 20:04

I am looking for some advice and having looked through the 1989 Le Mans
note I think I'll need it.

My brother-in-law and I are intending to go this year for the 1st
time. We would like to know how to go about booking camp sites,
getting camping permits, any good books on Le Mans, anything that
would help us make the trip a pleasant time would be useful, addresses
phone numbers of camp sites, how to get a map of the circuit, place to
watch, any general info for imbiciles like us would be welcomed.

Are there any good B/B places to stay?

Is it worth leaving the track once there?

Should we take food and drink?

Is there a supermarket nearby?

Is anyone else going?

I'd be willing to take this offline and meet anyone (for a drink) to
discuss this.

My dtn is (7) 774-6067

Thanks

Ok, delete this topic or put a "In memoria" notice on it. Heard
on this mornings Beeb World Service news; FISA has officially
announced that Le Mans has been cancelled this year, after a row
	with circuit organisers.

What they did'nt make clear was whether Le Mans was scrapped as
an official round of the WSC or scrapped in toto. Mind you, if
FISA schedule an official WSC round on the same weekend it's
as good as totally scrapped anyway.

What a bunch of Fatuous Incompetent Stupid A**holes.

    Wait and see.

FISA are so full of empty posturing and threats that it wouldn't
be particularly suprising to see Le Mans run after all.

    Don't cancel your ferry YET!

This is the first year I have had without O-levels,then A-levels, Then
my Degree, in which I may possibly NOT be in a blasted exam room when
    LE-MANS is ran,
And the Pr*tt has to go and cancell it.

Long article in the Times about why Le Mans will not take place this
   year.

Two things that have really upset FISA....

   1. ACO failed to apologise for "a campaign of defamation" against
      FISA.

   2. FISA accused the ACO of not giving "serious guarantees" that two
chicanes would be built on the Mulsanne straight.

If this upsets FISA, its nothing to what they'd feel if I got my
hands on them. F*** FISA, F*** Balestre.

The latest news : early this week FISA (Balestre and cy) and ACO
met and agreed on a number of things. In particular they agreed
to keep their conclusions secret for a week or 2. Then next day
bang ! JMB finds a press announcement about ACO building 2 chicanes
and how the 24h will take place ... etc ...

That last piece put JMB off
865.10Really Cancelled?VANILA::LINCOLNReality is not what it seemsFri Feb 02 1990 20:5916
I can't see how FISA can cancel Le Mans. Le Mans is such
an institution that it should be able to survive anything.

I imagine most of the 'spectators' would go if there wasn't
	any racing at all!.

Now if they were to quickly organise a race for say pre '70
'Sportscars', ie the ones that used to compete there, you wouldn't
be able to get near the place.

If it should be cancelled there will at least be one group
of presumably grey haired ex Lotus people who'll be cheering.
Te ACO are not beyond criticism, although I support them 100%
	on this chicanery stuff.

Heard on this mornings news :- Due to the safety requirements having now
being met, FISA has stated that the way has been cleared for a meeting
to discuss the possibility of running Le Mans this year after all..

Oh well, yet more "if's" and "buts" from the much esteemed FISA
organisation. Perhaps if other local race organisers started insulting
FISA old Ballsester might pick his ball up and go home !

For anybody who is thinking about going to Le Mans this year but has
not got a ferry booking , be warned they are in very short supply on
the more popular crossings. Portsmouth to Caen , last week the only
places available on the thursday were on the 3pm ferry. Coming back
seems to be even more of a problem. There seems to plenty of space on
the 4.30 boat on sunday, not supprising, and the next ferry with space
was that midnight monday boat , but that has no cabins.

Well the race is on, the track is as fisa say , untill someone changes
thier mind. How has everbody done with the ferries. What a bugger to
    book up.

There's just over a month before the annual prilrimage starts. I will
be again going in full splender in the range rover with the trailer
tent. I guess that it's about time for the predictions to start, god I
hope that we don't get into a silly situation with arguing like last
year. Any how here's my thoughts onthe race. Mercedes are not going to
win, thier not racing. I feel that it is going to be a Jaguar Porsche
fight with Joest being the team taking the mantel for Porsche. I don't
see that there are any other private porsche teams with the backing to
be in with a shout, but having said that Brun should not be dismissed.
That leaves the Far eastern contingent. Nissan are for sure fast but
witout wishing to start a war, they have in my mind, yet to prove the
staminer over this distance. Toyota are also in the same boat , they
are fast but don't seem to have the staminer to finish. Also so long
the dummy the Earl is driving for then they don't stand a chance. Look
at his form in sports car. Ok his fast, he's proved that in the sauber
in 87 but how may times does he go out of a race with a heavy crash. I
don't know what happened in 88, he kept the car on the island. Many
other WEC/WSPC races he has spun out and in 89 at Le Mans
comprehensivly stuffed the toyota and again this year at Monza.

Gut Feeling for the result is either Jaguar or Joest as winners and the
rest also ran and as per normal MAZDA 1,2,3 in the imsa/gtp class. I
wonder will the mazda have really load paint work again to match the
    noise of the car.
