836.0. "Are the roads going to seize up?" by SHAPES::GALVINS (Steven GALVIN @UCG, DTN:781-4393 :-)) Tue Nov 07 1989 13:19

I have lived in the Thames Valley for 4 years now, and over that time I
have noticed a gradual but alarming increase in the volumes of traffic
using our roads. Besides the volumes:

    1. rush hours have grown longer in time,

    2. gaps between cars have grown shorter,

    3. there seems to be more accidents,

    4. there is more agression,

    5. there are more queues,

    6. people are more inconsiderate,

    7. etc

Yes, I know I am making gross generalisations ( I hate people who
make gross generalisations ;^) ), but I think I am getting my point
    across.

    What do other noters think?

    Regards

    Steven

P.S. And this is not just confined to this area, the normal speed of
the M6 on a Friday night is 30 mph.

Thought some of you might like to comment on the attached from the
    Railways_UK Conference......

(Speedlink is the service that allows freight to be transported by the
wagonload, as opposed to the block or company train concept. Many
companies have started with wagonload and then grown to trainload with
    the growth of their business)

I see from the press that BR are axeing the Speedlink Service and
putting an extra 1 million tons of goods on the road.

Well done BR, how more short sighted can you get ?

The cost ok keeping this service going for 3 years will cost the same
    as 2 miles of Motorway.

    Good old BR!

Wasn't it the Post Office who have gone back to transporting their mail
via road rather than rail because the railways were not reliable enough?

It is about time someone taught them how to run a business properly!

Re: .50

I believe that mail is still conveyed by rail Mondays-Fridays. They
took it away at the weekends because the extra speed wasn't cost-justified.
