835.0. "Astra - fitting manual choke queries" by UKCSSE::ARBISER (mice one squirrel) Tue Nov 07 1989 12:39

    	I'm about to fit a manual choke to my Astra and just wanted to hear
    what tips any of you have for doing this job? Has anyone done this to
    a GM car already?

    	Specific questions are: -

    		* What happen to the autochoke parts, simply removal and
    discard? Where do the heater hoses go, a bridge to interconnect?

    		* Is there any defined cable run for the new choke cable.
    Does anyone (in Reading) have an Astra I could look at with a manual choke?

    		* Is it possible to have a light indicating that the choke
    has been activated?

    	Any other good tips welcomed.

    Thanks

835.2ASTRA SR STARTINGREPAIR::ATKINSFri Mar 20 1992 15:598

    	With my Astra SR i find that if i go for a drive and then leave the
    car to stand for 10 minutes and then try to start it that it can be a
    bit of pain,and reqiures some choke or a high amount or reving.
    		Has anyone ever had this problem with any car???

    	Cheers  ANDY>>>MUFC

    Fuel injected cars dont have a choke - manual or otherwise. They
    normally have some kind of fuel enrichment mechanism to help cold
    starting. This is usually controlled by a computer nowadays. It is
    possible that one of the sensors is faulty, causing the computer to
    keep the mixture at the wrong strength for hot starting.

    Yep, used to have this with the Golf CL and with the Polos

    Never had it with my Novas though :-)

    I think Andy's line in .2 should have read...

        With my Astra SR, I find that...

    Therefore it's got a carb.  8-)
835.6FORTY2::PALKAMon Mar 23 1992 13:3116
    re .5

    Ah, I assumed it was SRi ! (do they still make non-injected SRs ?)

    Yes, Astra automatic chokes dont work too well (In fact I haven't come
    across one on any car that works properly !). Unless they've changed the
    design the choke is heated electrically when the ignition is on. Once you
    stop the engine the choke cools down quicker than the engine, so the choke
    will activate when you restart a warm engine.

    Things to try
    - leave the ignition on for a minute before trying to start the engine.
    - Dont press the accelerator pedal when starting from hot (until the
      engine fires)

835.7HOKUS CHOKUS>REPAIR::ATKINSMon Mar 23 1992 15:4613

    	The Astra has actually got a manual choke.At the weekend i put some
    redex through the carb,and it seems to be running a bit better.Do you
    think that if i put double copper spark plugs in that it will make a
    big difference to the starting of the car.

    	Cheers   Andy   (The SR  driver)

    	P.s appologies if it seemed a bit misty(SR i).

    	P.P.S Does the idling speed influence pre-ignition as since i
    adjusted my idling setting i had pre-ignition on 2 occasions.

835.8VAPOUR LOCK......ALBURT::LEWISMon Mar 23 1992 16:1510
    Hi Andy,

    I used to have this problem with my 1300S, its all down to vapour lock
    in the carb, I believe that it says somethink about this in the manual
    you get with the car. It only happens when the engine in very hot. I
    think the book gave a solution, I think it was depress the accelerator
    half way and then start the engine. So don't go wating your hard earnt
    cash on spark plugs.

    <FLAME ON>

    This has been going on too long. I on its own is a CAPITAL letter. This
    topic is a good example of how correct grammar can save time and avoid
    confusion.

    I can take the odd typo but consistent bad grammar shouldn't occur in
    educated people.

    I know it's the wrong place to bring this up. But today has been a
    particularly pathetic day. How can anybody spell optician "optition"
    and still hold down a job? How did they get a job in the first place?

835.11idle and pre-ignitionOASS::BURDEN_D'24 Stude - The only way to TourMon Mar 23 1992 18:447
If you asjusted your idle by advancing the distributor, you can introduce
pre-ignition if you went too far. I like to bump the idle up on my VW's
to about 1200rpm and that works fine with 87 octane here in the US. I could
go as high as 1500rpm, but that would require a diet of the 92 or 93 octane
fuel which is about 25% more expensive.

    RE.10

    	Why thank you Teacher Winpenny,the blackboard eraser and chalk are
    in the post.

    RE.11
    	Thanks for the advise.But I didn't actually adjust the distributor
    to advance the idling speed,I just adjusted the idle speed setting on
    the carb,and I've found that turning the idle speed down stops the
    pre-ignition.

    Question:Does the timing need to be changed if you switch to unleaded?

    	Regards  Andy.....MUFC

    	I've put two new HT leads on my Astra,and now I get a small popping
    noise when start the car up (this is only occasional).It seems to be
    something to do the plugs and there firing.

    	Any suggestions!

    Grammar occuring in people ? Sounds like a metabolic reaction :-)
