Since this topic is on performance air filters, I would like to share
my experience in boosting my 10 year old Ford Laser(Mazda 323).

First of all, I managed to swap my standard exhaust with my colleague's
Janspeed exhaust(cost about 800 bucks Singapore when new) when he sold
his Laser Sports. I was doing at most 2000 revs at 70 kmph - awfully
slow and consumption was about 450 km for a full tank of unleaded 92
RON. With the "new" exhaust, I was able to do 2500 revs at 110 kmph.
I supposed the improvement was due to the free-flow concept of the
    Janspeed exhaust.

Then I changed the standard and bulky air filter assembly for a K&N
filter with breather unit. The money was well spent. There was more air
input though noisy at times. The CO level was 0.4%. The specs for the
laser gave 0.5% - 1.5% for CO level. I am currently able to hit 120
kmph at 3500 revs. My consumption figure? I am able to get 510 km for
    the same tankful of petrol.

The K&N filter probably allows more air into the combustion chambers
thereby giving better and more complete combustion which leads to
better power, mileage etc..Good air input at the filter end and good
    output at the exhaust end.
