This seems as good a place as any to get some advice on a problem I
    have just now.
I drive a Nova 1200 Merit and recently it's running like there was
    treacle in the tank!
It usually starts OK but driving around town or motorways I can have
my foot to the floor and be getting almost nowhere then it seems to
surge and then fall back again.
Consulting my trusty "AA book of the car" I found that the fuel supply
is fine, the filter is clean as a whistle, but as far as I can make out,
the advance/retard vacuum unit is a goner.
What are the symptoms if this is the case?
There appears to be a fluttering noise from the engine and I don't
think the fuel consumption is very efficient.
The way I see it is that the a/r unit may have been out for a while
and the timing has got steadily worse.
Also ,will the carburettor be sucking in air when it should be creating
    a vacuum?
Keeping the choke out helps slightly but can result in flooding.
Any of this sound remotely sensible?
    Opinions please.

I used to have a VW Polo which after a service decided that after about
50mph it would start to decelerate. The problem was that to points were
    to wide.

I very really take a car into a garage but when I do the result is
    always amusing :-(

My old Mini used to do that, for some reason the alternator had burnt
out and this made the car decelerate above 60mph down to 20mph for
about 2-3 mins then it would clear and off we would go again.

    Most distressing at the time.
