562.0. "MG - Bits & Pieces" by SHAPES::GROOMN (Nev) Tue Apr 25 1989 18:09

Having just purchased an MG Midget, I am interested in hearing of
any personal experiences other Deccies have had with this toy either
good or bad. I guess we don't have to limit this purely to the
Midget but also any other ancestors/children such as the Roadster,
    BGT, "A" & "C" series.

Richardsons in Staines, Middlesex, are an MG specialist and have a few TFs.
They may be able to help you, but I don't know their address or 'phone number.

THANKS FOR YOUR HELP.

I'M UNABLE TO FIND OUT THE PHONE NUMBER.
THE QUERY OFFICE WOULD APPRECIATE A BIT MORE ABOUT ABOUT THAT FAMILY
WHICH SEEMS TO BE NUMEROUS IN MIDDLESEX.
COULD YOU PROVIDE ME WITH EITHER THE SECOND NAME IF HE IS A PRIVATE ONE
OR THE COMPANY NAME IF IT IS A COMPANY.
IN ANY CASE, ADDITIONAL INFO IS WELCOME.

REGARDS...

Anyone know anything about an MG specialist in Aldershot? I stumbled
across it by accident while looking for a tile suppliers.

It looks like an advert from the 1930s, all it needs is a TD outside
with a Battle Of Britain fighter pilot driving. Lots of old interesting
looking cars (mainly MGs, but I saw at least one TR something-or-other).

It'd be pretty difficult for a B of B pilot to have a TD, it
	didn't appear until 1950 ish.

When I went to Richardsons, back in the 70s they had approximately
20, tidily restored, T series cars there. Guy must have been cashing
	in lately.

Does anyboy know which car the gearbox in my TVR Grantura comes from?
Is is from a MG or another BMC car. The main difference to the MGA box
is the clutch slave cylinder. It is mounted on top of the bell housing.
The rear silent bush mounting is also different. It is a loop and a
bolt through the rubber bush. Can anybody tell me the BMC model this
box comes from, or even has such a box for sale?

What engine does the car have? Is it possible it has the gearbox from the
same car as the engine? How old is your car?

See if there's a part no. or serial number on the 'box, give this to an AR
dealer and see if they can identify it for you. Or try MG / Triumph owners
clubs...

    re. 48.
The MG box was fited to either a MGA or Coventry Climax engine.
The TVR Grantura MKI to MKIIa were built between 59 and 62.

So which engine have *you* got? The chances are that most MG/BMC/Triumph boxes
from that era would fit, so maybe you're being over-cautious..

Why do you need to know? Has it broken? If so, why not take it to a gearbox
specialist and get it repaired, rather than trying to find another one...

    re. 50
I have several Granturas some with MGA some with Coventry Climax
and some without an engine. I need the gear box to complete the cars.
The described gear box is needed because of the fact that the frame
does not give enough space for the side mounted clutch slave cylinder.
The gearbox with the slave cylinder mounted on top is ideal for this
car. Trevor Wilkinson used this gearbox therefore. I would only need
the case, the internals have to be overhauled anyway.
It is right, I could use any box and make it fit, but this is much more
work and not original. By the way a ZF box was also fitted to the
Coventry Climax engined cars, if somebody can help me with one that
    would be great.

    Can anyone help ?

The girlfriend was driving the Midg on friday when the driving wheels
decided not to turn with the steering wheel (interesting !). Something
is obviously amiss with the steering rack. Is the join something that
can come undone (ie. So I can fix it), or is it something that breaks
(ie. I have to fork out for another steering rack).

Answers welcome asap as I now have to drop her off at work in the
    morning.

In the previous note, when I talk about join I mean the connection
between the rack & the column.

562.55HUGS::AND_KISSESI wish I understood...Tue May 28 1991 13:1818
Firstly, the steering wheel doesn't turn the driving wheels, unless you have a
very strange midget!

But that aside, a column usually attaches to the rack (dunno about midgets
specifically) with a splined shaft, there being a clamp bolt to hold it tight.

If the clamp bolt broke at some time, the slackness could have gradually worn
down the splines... in this case, it's a new steering column (or part of, if
it's in several sections), and either a new rack, or you may get somewhere to
fit a new splined shaft (unless you want to do it yourself).

If you jack the car up, and grab one front wheel and turn it, does the other
wheel still turn in the correct way? If not, then it's definitely a new rack
that's required.

Other problems could be broken teeth on the rack or drive pinion, or a broken
UJ in the steering column (if it has any!), or maybe the steering wheel has
come adrift from the splines at the top of the column...

Sorry about the wheel confusion 8-).

The wheels both turn at the same rate, so it would appear the rack's
OK. I managed to drive the car home myself, but needed to push the
steering wheel quite hard to ensure it engaged with the rack. From
your description Scott, it would appear that this 'clamp-bolt' has
abandoned the car, I don't think the splines have worn, they have just
come away from the rack. Seems like I can give it a crack tonight.

I found this serial-number plate in Old Bath Road, Newbury this

Any ideas how to reunite it with its owner?
