182.0. "But it won't go that fast NEW !!!" by FOOT::PERRIN (Post No Bills - Digital Graffiti) Thu Jun 02 1988 16:45

    OK, It finally happened......

Stopped for speeding on the M3 - heading home to London !

Having traveled 12,000 miles in the last 8 months, to and from
Reading (now Basingstoke)... My contract ends this friday (3/6/88)
so it was the third to last time I was doing the trip !

	The situation was...

I was just approaching the Kingston exit of the M3 ('bout 1
    to 1/2 mile)

I saw the police car (sitting on its hump, by the side of
    the road), so slowed down.

When I was well past, and out of sight, I accelerated again,
and headed of the slip road (this is about 500-800 yards long, leading to
traffic lights, on to a roundabout)

The lights were going red, so I slowed down, and pulled into
the right hand lane), then I heard a siren and the screeching of
tyres. I saw it was a police car moving very fast, so pulled over
out of its way.... it was still skidding, and stopped just short of me.
    (having skidded about 400 yards)

They then shouted at me to stop (which I already had), and got
    out.

He later showed me what I assume was a VASCAR (SP?) which showed
about 117mph, and he said they were doing 120mph, and I was pulling
away, so the charge is in excess of 120mph.

    My question is....

As they must have lost sight of me (to have been going that much
faster than me on the slip road), how can they be sure it was me
    who went passed them ?

As they were out of control of the car (massive skid) how can they
claim to have been in control of the vascar ?

As they are charging me with 120+, NOT the vascar reading of 117,
surely they should have followed me for 3/10 of a mile, at not more
than (whatever) yards !, (not 1/2 mile at more than 800 yards),
    shouldn't they ?

Also, my, license is (still) registered at my mothers address, so
they are doing me for that !

My Motorbike is regestered at my previous address (moved about a
month and a half ago), they are doing me for that also !!!

So finally, how do I get away with it !!!???

182.101 If speed kills, how come Nigel Mansell still lives? SUBURB::POWELLMNostalgia isn't what it used to be!Tue Aug 04 1992 21:0727

    	Re.45

Long time ago for any entry on this topic, but I'm only slowly
    catching up!

    >>>I heard on the radio the other day that the limit was introduced in
    >>>1964 after
    >>>AC tested one of their Cobras on the M74 (?) at 190mph......

    >>>                rik. . . . . .

It certainly wasn't on any M74 (there wasn't one!!!), it was the M1
on the northern most stretch. They tested all their production cars up
there - they would "only" do 170 BTW - and they did it in the early
hours of the morning and only about once per week (ie. at their rate of
    car production).

The do gooders threw up their hands in horror at the thought of any
one doing such speeds (perfectly safely!!!) and such a thing must be
stopped!!! After all, such people reason (if they have the
capability?) Speed Kills!!! I haven't heard anything more stupid than
that - where are all the dead astronauts if this were true? It is only
speed in the wrong place that can kill!!!

    >>>    RiChArD.

Bit on now but there wasn't a reply at the time.

Most of the Highway Code reflects common sense in driving, but the
Motorway section actually IS the law stated in plain English. ie. it
is actually against the Law to drive in the centre or outside (ie.
overtaking) lanes when not actually overtaking. There is a specific
offence of failing to drive in the Driving Lane on a Motorway. The
reason for this is simply that there are no right turns on a Motorway,
unlike all other roads, therefore there is no reason to be in any other
lane on a Motorway except when overtaking (Fog rules excepting, of
    course).

The Highway Code is regularly updated. The last update was about 3 years ago.

Re .101
It's the rate of change of speed that does the damage, not the mph.
Like jumping off a tall building. It's not the fall that kills you, it's
the sudden stop at the bottom :-)
