89.0. "Drive & Survive" by GOOGLY::KERRELL (I'm not a passenger...) Wed Mar 02 1988 17:38

I think the one day driving course available via Digital Edu Services
deserves it's own topic.

The course is run by a group of ex-policemen who have formed a company
called 'Drive and Survive' to teach people how to drive safely.

I went on the course on Monday and recommend it for both beginners like me
and the more experienced driver.

Anyone who wants to go on it now, give them a ring, I was the only person
booked in on Monday and they had _nobody_ at all on Tuesday.

    Just to resurrect this note :

    The D&S course is no more, it has ceased to be, run up the motorway,
    joined the traffic jam invisibule, etc

    I've just been enquiring after it, as I've been in the company 20
    months and not been on the course yet, even though I was told it was
    mandatory. I've been told, via personnel, that it has now been
    discontinued. We can no longer justify the cost.

    Fair enough, I guess, in the current climate. I wonder if it will get
    resurrected when times improve?

Hmm, when I went on D&S, I was told the reason it was "mandatory" was
that it saved a lot of money, by the reduced accidents from those
who had been on it.

They also mentioned that thenumber of deaths of Digital's drivers was
slowly reducing, and that D&S was the main reason....

Yet another "sort term saving == long term cost"

89.49lies,damned lies,statistics and accounting!VOGON::MITCHELLEOh! ......<o-' '42>.... oops!!!Fri Dec 14 1990 14:1610

    The problem with this sort of cost cutting excercise is in the way that
    they are 'accounted'. The D&S course is money which has to be a
    'justified' additional cost. Car repairs etc _have_ to be paid for,
    (and probably come out of a different allocation of money). Although
    statistically the overall cost may be less, the justification for
    spending 'extra' money is never as easy as running over a budget
    because of 'necessary' expenses.

    Unfortunately 'human cost' is very rarely included in calculations.
